BTI Photonic Systems Enhances Platform with 10 Gigabit-per-second Pluggable Optics

Enables simple, fast and reliable delivery of high bandwidth services at significantly lower costs

Ottawa, Canada, May 31, 2006 - BTI Photonic Systems Inc., a global supplier of low channel count - Thin-WDM - networking solutions for the build-out of new broadband services at the Optical Edge, announced today availability of its 10 Gigabit-per-second (Gbit/s) wavelength conversion module for the Netstender platform. The Netstender now supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet and OC-192/STM-64 interfaces, combining high bandwidth, high performance service delivery with cost-effective, scalable transport for metropolitan and regional networks.

"Many carriers are shifting their spending to building ROADM-mesh metro core transport architectures that operate at 10-Gbit/s," said Richard Mack, Vice President & General Manager, KMI Research. "With telcos increasingly offering video services there is a growing need for small channel 10 Gbit/s systems to complement large backbone build-outs and extend the intelligence and efficiency of the core to the edges of the network."

"Our customers told us there was a gap in the market for a carrier-grade platform offering 10 Gbit/s capabilities cost-effectively for low channel count requirements," said Glenn Thurston, VP Marketing, BTI Photonic Systems. "The BTI solution offers 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity at a significantly lower cost and smaller footprint than existing competing solutions. BTI's Netstender, with its comprehensive suite of DWDM multiplexing and amplification modules, and already a proven platform for 2.5G applications, is the platform of choice to address the 10Gbit/s requirements of service providers and network operators."

Using pluggable optics on line ports, the new 10 Gbit/s module offers users industry leading flexibility and the lowest total cost of ownership. It can translate any optical interface (850nm, 1310nm, DWDM) to any wavelength with full performance statistics, allowing service providers to profitably offer 10Gbit/s services with Service Level Agreements.

The new plug-in unit supports advanced networking features including client port utilization data and performance monitoring of both line and client signals to deliver 10Gbit/s transport, network demarcation, LAN-PHY point-to-point extension, and router port long span performance.

The module's signal regeneration capability also makes it an ideal solution for 10GbE and OC192/STM64 reach extension and line regeneration applications in metropolitan and regional networks, enabling 70% cost reduction compared to core DWDM or SONET/SDH platforms. Distances can be enhanced even further with BTI's family of terminal and line amplifiers.

BTI at Globalcomm 2006
BTI Photonic Systems will be demonstrating its next generation architecture next week at Globalcomm 2006, June 4-8 - McCormick Place, Chicago, IL., Booth # 47087.
The Netstender platform is currently deployed in 75 cities worldwide in 40 live networks, with 2,000,000 in-service hours.

About BTI Photonic Systems
With a focus on making broadband telecommunications networks more flexible, easier to operate and profitable, BTI Photonic Systems has developed its WDM Netstender(TM) platform, the industry's first optical edge system designed to utilize photonic layer architecture. Netstender consolidates key transport capabilities (DWDM/CWDM, Optical Multiplexing, Amplification, Dispersion Compensation and Wavelength Translation) within a single network element delivering industry leading CAPEX and OPEX savings, high density and future-proof networking capabilities for metropolitan and regional applications. BTI's Netstender addresses the issues of fiber relief, reach extension, 10G, 1G, and metro Ethernet service overlay enabling carriers to deliver new high-speed services while dramatically reducing their costs and increasing their overall market footprint.
