Mokon Introduces Iceman SM Series of Modulating Portable Chillers

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Mokon today announces the introduction of the Iceman SM Series, a new line of high-efficiency modulating chillers available in capacities from 5 to 15 Hp. The Iceman SM Series of green-friendly portable chillers utilizes the Copeland Scroll Digital compressor, capable of providing variable capacity output from 10% to 100% by axially separating internal scroll members. A controlled amount of discharge gas is bypassed for a varying amount of time, resulting in a reduction of compressor output that conserves energy while maintaining temperature stability.

The Copeland Scroll Digital compressor operates in two phases, a loaded phase and an unloaded phase, depending on load demand requirements. In the loaded phase, the bypass solenoid valve is closed and the compressor operates like a standard scroll and delivers full capacity.

In the unloaded phase, the bypass solenoid valve is opened, resulting in minimal or no capacity through the compressor. Reduced compression in the unloaded phase consumes significantly less energy, which leads to a reduction of compressor energy as compared to traditional portable chillers that use hot gas bypass for capacity modulation. This exact delivery of compressor capacity will ensure very tight operation and control of the refrigeration circuit and compressor operation for longer compressor life and increased accuracy in process fluid delivery temperatures. Higher energy-efficiency savings can be achieved when integrated with electronic refrigeration components.

Compressors are available for use with R-407C environmentally friendly refrigerants and fluid operating temperature capabilities of 20°F to 65°F (-7°C to 18°C) operation.

Additional features of the Iceman SM Series modulating chillers include:

  • Insulated non-ferrous plumbing and components
  • Air- and water-cooled condensing
  • Microprocessor-based electronic controller
  • Efficient brazed plate evaporator
  • Heavy duty insulated tank
  • Stainless steel centrifugal supply pump
  • NEMA rated electrical enclosure with safety door disconnect switch
  • UL 508A labeled electrical sub-panel
  • NFPA 79 electrical safety standards
