Original Press Release:

Modbus Protocol Offered with Panel Meters, Counters, Timers, Remote Displays and Transmitters

Costa Mesa, CA - Laurel Electronics, Inc. announces the availability of the Modbus protocol for its entire line of 1/8 DIN Laureate® digital panel meters, counters, timers, 6-digit remote displays, and DIN rail transmitters. The Modbus protocol is implemented by the microcomputer on the main board and is selectable as a menu option during device setup. It allows multiple Laureate and non-Laureate devices, such as PLCs, to be addressed on the same RS485 line.

The Modbus Serial Line protocol is a master-slave protocol, where a master node (computer) issues commands to slave nodes (peripheral devices) on the bus and processes responses. Laurel's Modbus implementation is fully compliant with the Modbus over Serial Line Specification V1.0 (2002), including RTU and ASCII transmission modes. There can be up to 247 digital addresses.

Laureate Modbus 1/8 DIN instruments include a Modbus RS485 serial communications board, which provides two 8-pin RJ45 jacks wired in parallel to allow daisy chaining without use of a hub. Two-wire half duplex or four-wire full duplex RS485 operation is jumper-selectable. With this board, up to 32 instruments can share the same RS485 data line with no repeater and be addressed using the Modbus protocol.

Laureate DIN rail transmitters come with a three-terminal screw clamp connector for serial data I/O. RS232 or two-wire RS485 operation is jumper selectable.

Laureate digital panel meters, counters, timers and 6-digit remote displays constitute a comprehensive family of 1/8 DIN size, panel-mountable instruments for measurement and display of all popular industrial signals associated with voltage, current, temperature, or pulse inputs. Pricing for base units starts at $210. The Modbus RS485 option board adds $90. Please see www.laurels.com.

Laureate Modbus DIN rail transmitters utilize the same signal conditioners as their 1/8 DIN instrument counterparts and are available for the same signal types. Pricing for base units, including the Modbus interface, starts at $210. Please see www.laurels.com/transmitters-modbus.htm.
