ATI unveils MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800

World's fastest and most powerful mobile workstation GPU designed for 3D animation and CAD/CAM

MARKHAM, Ontario - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE:ATY, NASDAQ:ATYT), a world leader in the supply of graphics, video and multimedia solutions, today introduced the MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800, the world's most powerful mobile workstation graphics chip.

The MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800, with exceptional OpenGL performance to meet the most demanding applications, is certification-ready for CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer- aided manufacturing) and other professional workstation applications, and is ideally suited for both professional content creation and playback.

"The MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800 delivers unmatched compatibility, reliability and performance to the new category of notebook workstations. The combination of outstanding 3D graphics performance and quality combined with workstation ISV (independent software vendor) support from ATI's FIRE GL team makes this the ideal choice for mobile workstation users," said Phil Eisler, Vice President & General Manager, Mobile and Integrated Business Unit, ATI Technologies Inc. "ATI has a top-tier group of OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and ISVs lined up behind this product line that will make it the standard for mobile workstations." With the recent acquisition of FGL Graphics, ATI is committed to the professional workstation market with not only industry leading desktop graphics, but also by providing the technology and support to bring workstations from the desktop to laptops. Now workstation OEMs and end users can have compatibility between desktop and notebook configurations to enable work to continue remotely without any compatibility issues. The MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800 incorporates ATI's award-winning2 RADEONTM technology, and offers mobile workstation users the highest level of performance, product reliability and stability. Other features include 64MB (megabytes) of 128-bit DDR (double data rate) memory and support for 3D resolutions up to 2048 X 1536 pixels in rich, 32-bit colour.

The MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800 also includes HYDRAVISION, which affords the MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800 advanced multi-monitor management software. HYDRAVISION allows users to define up to nine multi-monitor configurations. Work can be spread across the entire workspace or applications can be configured to one monitor or the other. Combined with its integrated TMDS support for external digital flat panels, MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800 delivers to the workstation superior multi-monitor management and support.

"We are delighted to see ATI enter the mobile workstation computing market. Their focus on this space will help provide SoftimagelXSI animators with the power and mobility many have sought to work on-the-fly, and support the spontaneity of the creative process regardless of physical location," said Alan Waxenberg, Business Development Manager at Softimage.

"ATI mobile graphics hardware and FireGL drivers and support are an ideal combination for workstation professionals using Unigraphics software," said Andy Plescia, Manager, Technical Operations at EDS PLM Solutions.

The MOBILITY FIRE GL 7800 also uses ATI's ground-breaking POWERPLAY voltage and frequency scaling technology, which modulates clock speeds and voltage settings automatically when users switch between AC (alternating current) and battery operation, and includes the option of user-selectable voltage/frequency scaling, which allows for maximum performance even when running off battery power.

"The workstation market is ready for the technology developments that will finally enable a marriage of a mobile form factor and workstation performance at realistic prices," said Pia Rieppo, Principal Analyst, Workstations, Gartner Dataquest.
