Original Press Release:

GOAL Introduces the VMX1016, a New, Highly Integrated Mixed Signal Microcontroller of the VERSA MIX Family of Products

Montreal, Canada, April 21, 2004 - Goal Semiconductor, the intelligent data acquisition leader, announces the launch of a new member of the VERSA MIX family. The new VMX1016-QAI16 (44-pin QFP package) is based on a powerful single cycle 8051 high performance processor, fully compatible with the VERSA MIX, which provides an average of 8 to 12 times more processing power than a standard 8051 microcontroller.

Pioneers on the Digital front

The VMX1016 is an innovative, feature-rich, fully integrated, cost-effective microcontroller based System-on-Chip (SoC) for the embedded data acquisition market.

The VMX1016 includes a large 56K block of in-circuit re-programmable Flash Memory, as well as 1280 bytes of RAM and 24 programmable I/O pins.

The device integrates an innovative and powerful hardware Arithmetic Unit that performs simultaneous 16-bit signed multiplication and 32-bit addition with the inclusion of a 32-bit Barrel Shifter: this Arithmetic Unit can be effectively used to implement DSP operations.

The VMX1016 offers a complete set of communication interfaces such as
o 2 UARTS,
o J1708/RS485/RS422 Compatible Differential Transceiver
o An enhanced SPI interface
o An I2C interface

Both VMX1016 UARTs include dedicated Baud Rate Generators and can operate at speeds of up to 500kbps. Inclusion of the Baud Rate Generators for the UARTs frees up all three 16-bit timer/counters for other uses. The second UART can be optionally connected to an integrated Differential Transceiver that provides the capability of transmitting/receiving data serially over long distances via twisted pair cable.

The VMX1016's SPI is a fully configurable Master/Slave interface. Up to 4 devices can be addressed in Master Mode via 4 dedicated programmable chip enables. The SPI interface can be configured to automatically handle 1 to 32-bit data transactions and more. The SPI interface clock polarity and phase are also programmable, providing support for all 4 SPI modes. Additionally, in Master Mode, the communication speed is fully adjustable up to 8Mbps.

The onboard I²C interface can operate at up to 1Mbps.

The device features also include four 16-bit resolution PWM outputs, 2 timer capture inputs and interrupt on port change capability.

Like the VERSA MIX, the VMX1016 offers unique Analog features

The VMX1016 can function as a complete data acquisition SoC. Its 5-Channel 12-bit A/D Converter can operate in single shot, automatic or continuous conversion modes at a rate of up to 10kHz with the ability to interrupt the processor once conversion is complete. The A/D Converter also includes a feature that allows automatic sequential conversion of 4 channels. D/A converters can be implemented by filtering the outputs of the PWMs. To aid in minimizing board level part count and hence system cost, the VMX1016 includes an internal reference for the A/D converter. An external reference can also be used.

Benefit of integration

The VERSA MIX family of products, including the VMX1016, because of their high level of integration, are ideal for cost sensitive applications in a broad range of applications that span the industrial, medical, consumer, instrumentation, automotive, intelligent sensor and power system market sectors. The VMX1016 operates from a 5V supply over the -40ºC to +85ºC industrial temperature range.
