Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. Receives Order for Automated People Mover System Capacity Expansion at Miami International Airport, Targeting Enhanced Passenger Experience
MIAMI – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. (MHIA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., received an order from the Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) to supply four (4) additional cars and implement a new guideway crossover for the MIA Mover Automated People Mover (APM) system. The 1.25-mile long system, which opened in September 2011, runs between the Miami International Airport terminals and the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) - an off-airport multi-modal transportation hub that includes rental car facilities and transfers to regional rail and bus lines. The MIA Mover APM system was awarded ENR Magazine's 2012 "Best of the Best" award for Safety, as well as its "Global Best Projects" Award of Merit. Delivery of the new vehicles is scheduled for 2016.
MHIA supplied the eight (8) existing, fully-automated, rubber-tired "Crystal Mover" APM cars that operate on the system and will be responsible for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the additional cars. MHIA, together with its subsidiary Crystal Mover Services, Inc., will continue to reliably operate and maintain the system, which regularly exceeds system availability requirements. MHIA also supplied twenty (20) cars for the North Terminal Skytrain, another APM system at Miami International Airport that is also operated and maintained under a contract with CMS.
The increasing daily usage and successful operation of the MIA Mover APM system has resulted in significant growth in system ridership far beyond estimated levels, which has prompted the necessary capacity expansion.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries received an order for 108 new cars for the Yurikamome Waterfront APM system in Tokyo in 2010, 110 cars for the Macau Light Rapid Transit APM system in 2011, and an order for an additional 16 cars and system upgrades for the Senkang-Punggol APM system in Singapore earlier this year.
