Integrated Cisco IOS Software Router Announced for Compact, Rugged 4th Gen Intel Core i7 Mission Computer from Curtiss-Wright

With Cisco Systems 5921 IOS router software, Parvus DuraCOR® 80-41 LRU eliminates need for separate network and processor subsystems, reducing weight/size by 40%

ASHBURN, Va. – Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that its Defense Solutions division has enhanced its lightest, highest performance small form factor rugged mission computer, the Parvus® DuraCOR® 80-41, with support for Cisco Systems® 5921 Embedded Services Router (ESR) Software. With the Cisco IOS®-based 5921 software now available as a pre-configured option, the mission computer enables system designers to deploy a single, compact Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) that combines both Cisco network routing and Intel® multi-core processing. Even better, the Linux-based Cisco router software application adds no additional size, nor weight to the rugged LRU. The combined router/mission computer approach also significantly reduces costs because the total system is priced lower than separate distributed processor and hardware router LRU system alternatives. This unprecedented SWaP-C optimization reduces size and weight 40% compared to an equivalent all-hardware-based router and mission computer combination .

The DuraCOR 80-41 is believed to be the industry’s first to combine rugged COTS 4th Gen Intel Core™ i7 mission computing with the Cisco router IOS software. It is ideal for use in SWaP-constrained airborne and ground vehicle based platforms. It is especially well suited for use in tactical communications systems that require network connectivity, situational awareness or C4ISR integration upgrades.

“By adding Cisco IOS router software to our DuraCOR 80-41 platform, which was already our lightest, smallest LRU mission computer, Curtiss-Wright has established a new class of SWaP-C optimized LRUs that uniquely combine network routing and high performance Intel processing in a single rugged subsystem,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense Solutions division. “We are excited to extend our rugged Cisco IOS-based system portfolio and our Cisco Strategic Technology Integrator (STI) partnership with the introduction of the industry’s first rugged COTS 4th Gen Core i7 mission computer offered with the Cisco 5921 router IOS software.”

Parvus Network Router Capabilities

When pre-loaded with the Cisco 5921 IOS router software, the DuraCOR 80-41 uses only a small fraction of the system’s CPU resources for Ethernet routing, and yet provides similar Cisco IOS feature set and secure mobile networking capabilities found in Parvus DuraMAR 5915 dedicated hardware router systems based on the Cisco 5915 ESR.

Curtiss-Wright’s Parvus routers provide Cisco Mobile Ready Net capabilities that deliver highly secure data, voice, and video communications to stationary and mobile network nodes across wired and wireless links. They support transparent access of mission-critical voice, video, or data information, including self-forming and infrastructure-less networking with no pre-configuration of peers required. They also perform radio aware routing to immediately recognize and react to changes in neighbor radio status, and deliver remote voice services with Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (CME). For optimal network security, Parvus routers protect against malicious attacks and unauthorized access with advanced security technologies such as authentication, identity management, security protocols, secure connectivity, and integrated threat management.

About the DuraCOR 80-41

Powered by a multi-core 4th Gen Intel® Core® i7 (“Haswell”) processor, the low-power, fanless DuraCOR 80-41 system delivers higher computational performance, more powerful graphics, unmatched I/O, modular expansion and greater data storage flexibility compared to its predecessor, the DuraCOR 80-40, while reducing overall size and weight by 25%.  The result is high performance multi-core processing in a lightweight “shoebox”-sized rugged enclosure. This latest member of Curtiss-Wright’s industry-leading family of DuraCOR small form factor mission computers boasts 2x the processor cores (quad versus dual), 2x the memory capacity (16GB versus 8GB), adds built-in support for Mini PCIe I/O expansion modules, and uses high capacity mSATA SSDs to further improve its overall SWAP-C envelope.
