SYNOPSIS: o Sybase extends support for Oracle database environments with Mirror Activator, an industry-leading business continuity solution that enhances traditional database replication methods and provides disaster recovery support.

o Oracle information management customers can now benefit from reduced failover time, zero data loss, and immediate access to standby data.

BOSTON, EMC World 2006, April 25 / -- Sybase, Inc. (NYSE:SY), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, today announced that Mirror Activator(TM) is now available for Oracle® database environments. Mirror Activator is a leading business continuity solution that enables organizations to dramatically reduce failover time, and restore data availability in seconds (versus hours with other solutions) with no data loss in the event of a system failure. Mirror Activator has been available for Sybase Adaptive Server® Enterprise (ASE) customers since 2004.

"Mirror Activator has had a successful track record on Sybase® database environments since 2004. By making it available on Oracle environments, we are delivering the benefits of our business continuity solution, including disaster recovery support and increased data availability, to more organizations, enabling them to protect their mission-critical applications in the event of a system failure," said Kathleen Schaub, vice president of product marketing, Information Technology Solutions Group at Sybase.

Mirror Activator allows more productive use of database systems by complementing industry-leading storage replication solutions from vendors such as EMC Corporation, Hitachi Data Systems, IBM, NetApp and Veritas. With Mirror Activator, customers have access to remote data at all times, thereby increasing utilization of existing hardware and software. The solution works in conjunction with industry-leading disaster recovery software like EMC® Symmetrix® Remote Data Facility (SRDF), which replicate data to remote locations using either synchronous or asynchronous modes of operation.

Barbara Robidoux, vice president platforms marketing, EMC, said, "The EMC SRDF family of replication software continues to be the gold standard for providing business continuity to mission-critical environments. With Sybase extending support for Oracle, more of our mutual customers can leverage their current investment in SRDF to maximize business continuity and protect their information."

"As companies are trying to extend the capabilities of their disaster recovery solutions, a key challenge is to get storage and database replication services to work more closely together," said Rhoda Phillips, IDC storage research manager. "Solutions like Sybase's Mirror Activator for Oracle that seek to combine the best elements of storage and transactional replication will help companies improve failover times, ensure transactional integrity and provide a warm standby in a storage replication environment."
