Curtiss-Wright Expands New Ultra Small Network Product Family with EMI-Protected 6-Port Ethernet Switch

Latest “pocket sized” miniature Ethernet switch ensures signal integrity with EMI-suppressing Quadrax connector

ASHBURN, Va. — Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that its Defense Solutions division has introduced the newest addition to its groundbreaking family of ultra-small form factor (USFF) network switches, the Parvus® DuraNET® 20-12 6-port 10/100 Ethernet switch subsystem. Joining the recently announced 8-port DuraNET 20-11 GbE switch, this rugged, highly miniaturized and fully managed carrier-grade Layer 2/Layer 3 switch solution features a rugged rectangular connector with Quadrax contacts to ensure superior EMI immunity. This specialized connector ensures that other electronics are protected from electrical interference generated by the network switch, while also delivering optimal signal integrity for the switch’s Ethernet signals. The unit’s Quadrax connectors deliver 100 Ohm differential impedance matching for all Ethernet signals along with integrated EMI/power filtering. Power input voltage, spikes, surges, transients, and EMI/EMC compatibility is provided per MIL-STD-704F, MIL-STD-1275D, and MIL-STD-461F for use in both aircraft and ground vehicle installations.

The DuraNET 20-12 is designed to provide optimal performance in deployed defense, aerospace, and civil ground vehicle and aircraft platforms that require extremely low size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C). Both the DuraNET 20-12 and the earlier announced DuraNET 20-11, which differs in that it features circular MIL-DTL-39999-like connectors instead of Quadrax connectors, combine a stacked PCB architecture with system-on-chip (SOC) technology to deliver advanced network switching in the smallest possible form factor. Weighing less than 0.55 lbs., this cost-effective line-replaceable unit (LRU) is only 10 cubic inches in size and consumes less than 5.0 Watts of power.

Use of this highly rugged unit speeds and simplifies the integration of modern network architectures into unmanned air systems (UAS), ground vehicles, fixed wing/rotary aircraft platforms and other SWaP-C constrained applications that must endure harsh environmental and noisy electrical conditions.

“We are very excited to add the Parvus DuraNET 20-12 to our new family of ultra-small form factor rugged COTS subsystem networking solutions,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense Solutions division. “Like the recently introduced DuraNET 20-11, with which we inaugurated a new era of ‘pocket-size’ rugged networking solutions, our new DuraNET 20-12 delivers outstanding size, weight, power, performance, and management capabilities in a package well suited for demanding environmental requirements onboard unmanned systems, helicopters, and other SWaP-constrained platforms.”

The DuraNET 20-12 provides true carrier-grade Layer 2/Layer 3 Ethernet software management features, including support for IEEE-1588v2 Precision Timing Protocol (PTP). Designed to perform optimally in the harshest conditions, this rugged LRU is designed to comply with MIL-STD-704F, MIL-STD-1275D, and MIL-STD-461F environmental standards for deployment in demanding civil and military applications. Packaged in a fully sealed IP67 enclosure, the DuraNET 20-12 had no moving parts, supports extended temperature operation (-40 to +85C) and is resistant to high shock/vibration, humidity, altitude, and dust/water ingress.

Curtiss-Wright’s USFF DuraNET 20-11/12 switches set a new standard for SWaP-optimization through the use of advanced PCB layout techniques and a highly integrated SOC that combines switch, management processing, and PHY functionality on a single highly reliable silicon device.
