Sandvik Coromant Interactive Presentation at IMTS Spotlights Productivity Partnerships
The Sandvik Coromant display at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) will show how productivity partnerships greatly reduce leadtimes, cut costs, and improve productivity in real-world applications. Three interactive case histories at Booth E2604 will spotlight innovative Sandvik solutions in the automotive, airframe, and die and mold industries. The presentations will quantify the productivity payoffs of Sandvik Plura solid carbide endmills. Wiper geometry inserts, and the versatile CoroMill 390 milling cutter. In addition, computer-generated calculations will show how choosing the right tooling at the time of machine purchases can improve payback. Computers at the booth will also introduce Digital Sandvik -- the e-commerce solution to industry's tooling needs.
Elsewhere at the Sandvik booth will be a range of new products. Here are some of the IMTS highlights.
New In Milling
Sandvik's new CoroMill Century high speed machining facemill combines high edge security with minimal runout to maximize throughput in aluminum, graphite, and other non-ferrous materials. It gives automotive, aerospace, and general industrial
manufacturers a productivity-enhancing facemill capable of 40,000 rpm. The new segmented cutter uses carbide or polycrystalline diamond inserts. The serrated inserts and micro-adjustable mating pockets (patent pending) locate cutting edges accurately and repeatably despite high radial loads. The rigid, stable, CoroMill Century facemill is available from 1.5 to 6.0 in. (40 to 160 mm) diameter.
Also debuting at the Sandvik booth is the high-throughput CoroMill 390 long-edge facemill for feed rates 25 to 40% higher than common indexable facemills. The productive new cutter uses 18 mm long inserts made extra-thick for greater strength when making deep cuts in high-temperature alloys and other tough materials. It is designed to maximize chip removal and reduce machine horsepower requirements. The CoroMill 390 long-edge facemill is available in 2 to 8 in. diameter, initially with
couplings for the rigid, accurate Coromant Capto modular toolholding system.
In addition to the advanced segmented cutters, Sandvik Coromant is expanding the Plura line of solid carbide endmills with new coated carbide Grade GC1610. The fine-grain carbide with its TiAlN coating is designed to enhance the finish and accuracy
of dies and molds hardened to greater than 48 Rc.
Newcomers in Turning
Also at IMTS, Sandvik will introduce new turning products. VCEX geometry inserts for Swiss machining are the latest addition to the CoroTurn family of turning inserts. The extra-sharp, high positive rake, V-style inserts minimize cutting forces for
cleaner, smoother shallow-depth cuts. They are available in carbide and cermet grades for finishing and super-finishing cuts in a full range of materials including cobalt chrome
and stainless steel.
New for Swiss machining, CoroCut tool holders with 3/8 and _ in. shanks permit external turning and profiling with standard CoroCut inserts. The rigid new toolholders for the first time enable Swiss machine operators to use modern carbide grades for
multiple operations.
Sandvik will also introduce new turning heads specifically designed to maximize the productivity of multi-tasking machines. The new heads improve access to the cutting area and enhance positioning accuracy.
Drilling Advance
For holemaking, the new R-840 Delta C drill achieves higher penetration rates and greater speeds for up to 100% greater productivity than conventional solid carbide drills. It uses Sandvik's new grade 1220, a fine-grained carbide grade with a multi-layer coating to last twice as long as ordinary drills. Suitable for materials ranging from aluminum to super alloys, the extra-sharp drill is available in diameters from 3 to 20 mm.
