Milling Machine provides 5-axis simultaneous milling.

Press Release Summary:

With max speed of 164 fpm and 40 kW spindle running at 24,000 rpm, HEXAPODE CMW 380 corrects geometrical errors of support machine. When milling in successive meshes, head of machine moves, while support machine remains fixed. It enables high-speed machining of large items in 5 axes with no modification of support machine. When milling in successive strips, unit moves at same time as support machine, enabling milling of strips of up to 3.3 ft wide.

HEXAPODE CMW 380 Offers High Speed, Five Simultaneous Axes Milling With Unmodified Conventional Machine Tool

Chicago, November 24, 2003

The French company CMW is introducing its high speed HEXAPODE CMW 380 milling machine. During the milling of large items on gantries, boring machines and milling machines, the masses in movement can exceed ten or even twenty metric tons. Such heavy weights have considerable tracking errors. For example, they cannot respect trajectories in angles, and they can neither accelerate rapidly nor brake effectively. These heavy weights are therefore slow and not very accurate. In contrast, with a 440 lb. moving mass, HEXAPODE CMW 380 is faster, more accurate and more stable. The new machine has a maximum speed of 164 feet per minute and a standard 40 kW spindle running at 24,000 rpm.

In addition, HEXAPODE CMW 380 automatically corrects the geometrical errors of the support machine. All the errors of the support machine are measured (errors in X, Y, Z and in roll, pitch and yaw), then they are entered in the machine's software and HEXAPODE CMW 380 makes all the corrections.

When milling in successive meshes, only the head of HEXAPODE CMW 380 moves and the support machine remains fixed. After milling its entire working volume, the support machine moves one step and stops. Then HEXAPODE CMW 380 starts milling again. It is thus possible to perform high speed machining of large items in five axes with no modification of the support machine.

When milling in successive strips, HEXAPODE CMW 380 moves at the same time as the support machine, enabling strips of up to 3.3 feet wide to be milled.

Programming is very simple and requires no post-processor and no new language. In addition, the machine's six legs are never subjected to bending stress. They only operate in traction and compression, making HEXAPODE CMW 380 much more rigid than other machine tools.

The company is currently seeking North American distributors, importers, and business contacts.
