MIMOtech Announces Doubling of Backhaul Throughput with Air Division Duplexing
Janus AirDuplex achieves up to 1Gb/s Carrier Ethernet data throughput in a 28MHz bandwidth with a single radio
CAPE TOWN, South Africa, – MIMOtech has announced the launch of the Janus AirDuplex™ range of ultra-high capacity microwave backhaul radios, challenging traditional assumptions about capacity and bandwidth. Using a patented technique called Air Division Duplexing (ADD), which combines MIMO and full duplex transmission, the Janus AirDuplex achieves data rates of up to 1Gb/s in a single 28MHz channel, and 2Gb/s in a 56MHz bandwidth.
Janus AirDuplex addresses the challenge of an escalating need for Carrier Ethernet data throughput against the limited microwave spectrum available to operators. It is suitable for small cell, microcell and macrocell mobile deployments for a range of technologies including LTE/LTE-A and potentially 5G, providing a cost-effective alternative to fibre and millimetre-wave links for enterprise and government applications.

Currently available microwave systems can typically only achieve up to 500 Mb/s in a 28 MHz channel allocation. Air Division Duplexing however is an entirely new technology that uses spatial multiplexing to double the capacity and spectral efficiency compared to current solutions. With an antenna separation of typically only 100mm, it can be considered as a quasi single-aperture antenna from the point of view of licensing, site rental cost and implementation. Both CAPEX and OPEX are reduced due to lower spectrum fees, lower site/tower rental fees and lower maintenance costs, while software definability offers downstream savings in upgrade costs.
In addition, the Air Division Duplexing technology brings reusability to frequency spectrum below 42 GHz that up to now has been limited to backhaul applications with a maximum of several hundred Megabits per second. These frequency bands can be re-applied for Gigabit backhaul applications.
