NEC Electronics Announces New 32-Bit V850ES/Dx2 Microcontrollers for Automotive Dashboard Applications

DUESSELDORF, Germany, KAWASAKI, Japan and SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 17 -- NEC Electronics today announced the availability of the V850ES/Dx2(TM) 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) for the automotive market. The V850ES/DG2(TM) and V850ES/DJ2(TM) MCUs are ideal for driver information systems such as instrument clusters that include display and diagnostic functions. The devices are also suitable for industrial applications where controller area network (CAN) functionality is combined with control-oriented peripherals, in particular high drive output capabilities.

Following the success of its V850ES/Fx(TM) series for car body electronics and the V850ES/Sx(TM) series for car audio equipment, NEC Electronics continues its successful family market approach of combining application- specific features with high scalability in the V850ES/Dx2 MCU series for dashboard applications.

The new MCUs meet the automotive market's need for high flexibility and choice of variants. The V850ES/DG2 device offers 128KB of flash or mask read- only memory (ROM), with four-channel stepper motor drivers in 100-pin QFP packaging. A 256KB version is also a planned addition to the product line. The V850ES/DJ2 MCU offers 256KB of flash or mask ROM with six-channel stepper motor drivers in 144-pin QFP packaging. The variety of derivatives enables products to fit perfectly to specific automotive application requirements, making it easy to migrate to a larger device if additional memory is needed. Due to these devices having identical peripherals and pin-to-pin compatibility within one package size, a change during the development phase is an easy task. Up to 16 analog-to-digital (A/D) channels as well as up to seven 16-bit timers complete the feature set tailored for the dashboard market.

NEC Electronics' new system in package (SiP) is the basis for the V850ES/Dx2 series, which combines a V850ES/Fx series chip die with a meter controller chip side by side in one package. The advantages of this concept are reduced development efforts and shorter time to market, thus leading to an excellent price/performance ratio.

The entire V850ES/Dx2 series requires just a single tool environment, and low-cost tools providing debugging capability via N-wire interface are available. The V850ES/Dx2 microcontrollers are qualified for the required temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C for automotive applications.

Pricing and Availability
Samples of the V850ES/DG2 microcontroller are US$16 each and are available now with volume production scheduled to start in December 2005. Samples of the V850ES/DJ2 device are expected to be available in August 2005 with volume production expected to start in June 2006. Pricing and availability are subject to change without notice.
