ZiLOG® Targets Chinese MCU Market with 12KB Flash Addition to Award-Winning Z8 Encore! XP® Family

Scalability, Low Power, Integrated Peripherals and Competitive Cost Key to Success in Emerging Economies

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 23 / -- ZiLOG(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:ZILG), the creator of the Z80(R) microprocessor and a leading innovator of integrated microcontrollers (MCUs) and universal remote control solutions, announced that it has extended its award-winning Z8 Encore! XP(R) portfolio of 8-bit MCUs with the addition of the new F0830 Series. This introduction builds on the success of the existing Z8 Encore! XP series, which has already gained significant traction in the 8-bit market. The F0830 is primarily targeted at the Chinese MCU market, where ZiLOG believes the product will quickly gather momentum in key applications such as entry level universal and brushed/brushless DC motor control, digital power management, battery charging, environmental sensors and electronic control of appliances.

The introduction of the F0830 family continues ZiLOG's strategy of introducing products that integrate as much functionality on-chip as possible without compromising on performance. The system level integration afforded by the F0830 allows customers the scalability and flexibility to migrate their designs as required, as well reducing energy consumption, overall system cost through lower bill of materials, board space and design cycle time -- all factors that assume great importance in the decision-making process in the China MCU market. Digital power management is another area where ZiLOG believes the F0830 will perform well, as it presents an application-specific, low power and low cost solution that addresses issues such as energy efficiency in home appliances. The ease of migration and low cost tools that the F0830 package offers also makes design houses and other Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs), a sector that is particularly strong in China, additional key targets for the F0830.

Commenting on the latest addition to the Z8 Encore! XP family, ZiLOG chairman and CEO Jim Thorburn said: "When developing the F0830, we took into account the current and expected demands of emerging MCU markets such as China and India. Factors such as low cost and low power, allied with the need for overall system integration and scalability were all considerations addressed in bringing this member of the Z8 Encore! XP family to market. Looking at the Asia-Pacific market and China in particular, demands for consumer items such as DVD players, recorder and digital televisions is set to explode over the next three to five years. Consider the need for robust yet feature rich components and initiatives such as the China Energy Conservation project, and it becomes apparent that the F0830's on-chip feature set, coupled with the low cost, low power and its fully scalable nature, are factors that we believe will bode well for the product in China."

L.M. Wang, Regional VP of Sales, ZiLOG Asia, added: "We have already had a number of enquiries about the F0830 from existing and potential customers in the Chinese market, and expect to see the devices used in automotive applications, for example, car voltage regulators, personal health devices such as heart beat detectors, computer peripherals, digital power management in devices including set top boxes and LCD TV sets, battery charging, motor control in electrical appliances and security applications such as PIR management."

Available immediately, the Z8 Encore! XP F0830 Series devices are Flash MCUs based on the powerful ZiLOG eZ8 CPU. The family supports up to 12 Kbytes of Flash program memory along with 256 Byte register RAM that is pin-for-pin compatible with other members of the Z8 Encore! XP family, allowing an easy migration path from 1KB up to 12KB.

About the F0830
The F0830 family's value proposition includes a highly integrated peripheral set that brings feature such as a 'best in class' successive approximation register (SAR) Analog to Digital Converter (ADC), offering up to eight channels along with very fast conversion times, 'on-chip.' Other key features of the F0830 include two enhanced 16-bit timer blocks featuring capture, compare and pulse width modulation (PWM) capabilities, meaning accurate digital control of motors and power supplies, further reducing system costs and power consumption, and up to 18 vectored interrupts with programmable priorities, providing increased design flexibility in end applications. An on-chip internal precision oscillator (5.53 MHz/32KHz) performs as a trimmable clock source that requires no external components. In addition, the F0830's single-pin debugger and programming interface simplifies code development, allowing for easy in-circuit programming. ZiLOG estimates the integration of peripherals on-chip will result in a bill of materials savings against competing MCUs of between $US 0.11 and $US 0.50 per unit, as well as making system development much easier.
