Matsushita Electric (Panasonic) Develops 8-bit Microcontrollers Featuring New Flash Memory

- High-speed processing and low power consumption suitable for audio equipment and home appliances -

Osaka, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., best known for its Panasonic brand products, today announced it has developed a wide range of 8-bit microcontrollers with capacities up to 512 KB. These microcontrollers incorporate the latest, high-speed flash memory with the fastest 20 MHz processing speed at lowest power consumption level of 18 mW in the industry. The new microcontrollers, ranging from 32 KB to 512 KB of flash memory size and packaging of 44 to 128 pins, are ideal for usage in audio equipment and home appliances.

System control microcontrollers with built-in flash memory that substitute mask ROM are central to product development in shorter time frames. The new chip delivers shorter development times as it can rewrite the program after being mounted on the set.

The new microcontrollers incorporate critical technologies. They are the industry's smallest memory cell with an 0.18 micron impalpable process for the new flash memory core. This means smaller sizes and faster processing to the highest standard of the industry. They also incorporate a built-in 8-bit CPU core "AM13E/AM13" to deliver the lowest power level processing of 1.8 volts with high code generation efficiency.

Sample shipments of MN101CF91D (64 KB) and MN101EF16N (512 KB) are planned to start at the end of this month at unit prices of 300 yen and 1,000 yen, respectively. Mass production starts in January 2005. Other models will follow.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. owns 173 Japanese and 44 overseas patents on the new microcomputers, including current applications.
