Low Current 8-PIN Flash Microcontroller Brings Cost Effectiveness In Battery-Operated Devices

EM Microelectronic's EM6580 combines Flash memory with low power in a small package, creating a versatile and user-friendly chip

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - January 25, 2005 - EM Microelectronic, an electronic systems company of the Swatch Group, announces a Flash microcontroller with high integration level, ideal for use in battery-operated and cost sensitive applications. The EM6580 combines several key features including true low current operation with no external components, 4-bit ADC or 12-level voltage level detector and on-chip Flash memory to create an easy-to-use, multi-functional MCU. It is also possible to store a unique serial ID number on each device produced, allowing for unique identification and traceability.

The EM6580's Flash memory increases flexibility while its small SO-8 package saves valuable PCB space. These qualities make the EM6580 ideal for ultra-low power and portable products as well as simple analog sensing applications. Its low voltage and low power consumption make it especially suitable for controlling tasks in battery-powered devices, household appliances and body-care products.

"Save space, save power, save money: the EM6580 does it all!", says Mougahed Darwish, president of the management board of EM Microelectronic. "This is a unique, small general purpose microcontroller consuming as low as 3.3uA in standby mode and requiring no external components. We first developed the ROM counterpart and many customers told us that they wanted a flash version to bring their products to market faster and to increase flexibility by allowing software change in the application, while preserving ultra low current consumption. This is what EM6580 is all about: it is an ideal choice for cost-sensitive applications requiring very low power consumption. Not only it is compact but it offers high performance for a product of its kind."

Features include:
o True Low Current: 5.8uA active mode/3.3uA standby mode/0.32uA sleep mode
o Memory: Flash 4k x 16 bit, RAM 80 x 4 bit
o 5 or 6 I/Os with 2 high drive outputs of 20mA
o Unique 52-bit serial ID number (is different and independent for each produced device)
o Power-on-reset with power-check and brownout control
o Sleep counter reset: automatic wake-up from sleep mode (with 4 selectable timings)
o Low voltage: 2.0V to 5.5V
o Internal RC oscillator 32 kHz - 800 kHz with outstanding stability
o 8-bit serial interface
o Delivery form: SO-8, SO-14 package, die

EM6580 is the Flash counterpart of ROM-based EM6680 and the two products are pin-to-pin and completely function compatible.

Typical applications of the EM6580 include domestic appliances and toys, safety and security devices, automotive controls, sensor interfaces, watchdog, intelligent ADC and driver applications.

Development Support and Availability
The EM6580 is available now from EM and its authorized distributors in SO-8 and SO-14 packages, as well as in die form.

The EM6580 is supported by Windows-based simulator and emulator tools provided by EM Microelectronic, and is programmable with third party programmers. A demoboard is also available for initial evaluation and development. A complete datasheet and additional information can be found on www.emmicroelectronic.com/Products.asp?IdProduct=215 .
