Epson Develops Low-Power Consumption 4-Bit Microcontroller with Industry's Highest-Resolution Dot Matrix LCD Driver

- Ideal for Monitoring Temperature and Humidity

- TOKYO, Japan, May 13, 2008 -

Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") today announced the development of the S1C6F632, a low-power-consumption 4-bit flash microcontroller that contains the industry's highest resolution*1 dot matrix LCD driver. Shipment of samples will begin in June 2008, and volume production of 500,000 units per month is scheduled to start in August.

Targeted at growing demand for high-resolution displays required by products such as sports watches, especially in the Japanese and Chinese markets, the 4-bit microcontroller is a microcomputer with an on-chip LCD driver featuring industry-leading*1 resolution of 48 SEG x 32 COM (1,536 dots). Connecting LCD panels directly to the microcontroller makes display of Chinese characters, graphs and more a simple matter. Thanks to Epson's special low-power analog IP and low leak current process technology, standby power consumption is just 0.7 µA, making a big contribution to longer battery life.

The on-chip 31,744 word high-capacity flash memory also leads the industry for 4-bit microcontrollers*1. Powerful peripheral circuits include a resistance-to-frequency A/D type converter (R/F converter) capable of easily monitoring temperature and humidity. The microcontroller's single port supply voltage internally generates multiple voltages required to drive LCD panels, doing away with the need for a dedicated external power supply. Since a dedicated display chip is also unnecessary, the S1C6F632 enables devices for applications with LCDs to be constructed with the minimum number of components.

These capabilities make the S1C6F632 ideal for regular or sports-type watches, clocks and weather stations, or other such products where long battery life, space-saving, temperature/humidity monitoring and enhanced monochrome display are important considerations.
