Renesas Technology Introduces SuperH Microcontroller for Next-Generation Automotive Powertrains That Achieve Better Performance and Efficiency

July 16, 2008

The SH72544R MCU has a 400-MIPS Real-Time Processing CPU and a 2.5Mbyte Flash Memory for Implementing Highly Precise Control Systems

SAN JOSE, Calif.-- Renesas Technology America, Inc. today introduced the SH72544R 32-bit microcontroller (MCU), the newest member of the popular 32-bit SuperH® RISC family. It enables the design of advanced electronic controls for car and truck engines and transmissions that boost efficiency, decrease emissions, and improve performance. Operating at speeds up to 200MHz, the MCU achieves the 400-MIPS performance and the high reliability essential for next-generation automotive applications and has 2.5Mbytes of on-chip flash memory for storing highly precise real-time control algorithms. It is available as a packaged device (272-pin P-BGA) specified for operation at 125°C.

Amrit Vivekanand, marketing manager, automotive business unit, Renesas Technology America, said, "Customers now using the SH72546RFCC software-development MCU that we introduced last year can directly use the system hardware, programs, and other design assets they have developed. Transitions of such assets to the SH72544R MCU will be quick and seamless. Leading-edge powertrain control system designs that take full advantage of the capabilities and features of our new chip can provide smooth and outstanding engine and transmission performance while delivering enhanced mileage with fewer emissions."

The many peripheral functions built into the new MCU meet the specific requirements of advanced engine and transmission control systems. Besides a multifunction timer (ATU-III: Advanced Timer Unit III), the SH72544R provides a fast multichannel 12-bit A/D converter, CAN interface, high-speed serial interface functions, multi-input signature generator, and more. This high level of integration saves cost and allows compact controls that fit into tight spaces in engine compartments, transmission cases, etc.

The SH-2A superscalar 32-bit RISC CPU core of the SH72544R has the computing power needed to execute very fine-grained, high-level, real-time control of engine/transmission systems. Despite providing the large 2.5Mbyte on-chip flash memory made possible by fabrication in a 90nm process, the power-efficient MCU consumes less than 900mW, even when operating at 200MHz in +125°C environment. Its flash capacity is 2.5 times that of the popular SH7058, sufficient for storing the larger application programs required to obtain performance improvements. Additionally, for data storage, the new MCU provides 128Kbytes of flash memory with functions and endurance essentially equivalent to those of EEPROM. This eliminates the need for external EEPROM and thus reduces system costs.

Although flash memory generally has a slower maximum operating speed than digital logic circuits due to its operating principle, Renesas has applied unique technologies to increase the speed of the flash built into the SH72544R chip. Further, the MCU incorporates a low-power cache system that optimizes the use of flash memory. The overall result is flash memory performance that is essentially equal to single-cycle access at 200MHz.

Support for the new SH72544R MCU includes the previously mentioned SH72546RFCC device that facilitates software development. The SH72546RFCC differs by having a large-capacity emulation RAM for efficient debugging and allowing control parameters to be adjusted while it is operating. Other development tools in Renesas' comprehensive suite of support products include the high-performance Embedded Workshop (HEW) integrated development environment with software toolchain and project-management functions, and the E10A-USB compact on-chip debugging emulator, which is powered from the USB bus.
