EM Microelectronic Announces Ultra Low-Power 8-Bit Microcontroller with Flash Memory

Ideal for portable applications and integrating powercheck and brownout functions, yet robust in harsh environment

Colorado Springs, Colo. - October 12, 2004 - EM Microelectronic, an electronic systems company of the Swatch Group, announces the EM6812, an ultra low-power 8-bit microcontroller with FLASH memory. Designed for portable applications, the RISC-based EM6812 consumes only 120 uA from a 3-volt supply in active mode operating at 1MHz, and as little as 0.8uA in standby mode at 32kHz - less than half the power of any similar microcontroller.

"The EM6812 microcontroller achieves a new milestone for ultra low power, yet delivers a robust combination of features for portable designs," said Mougahed Darwish, president of the management board of EM Microelectronic. "It delivers up to 2.5 MIPS and achieves 2200MIPS/Watt, making it one of the world's lowest power 8-bit flash MCU. And with its wide supply voltage range from 2V to 5.5V and 8-level supply voltage level detection, the EM6812 is ideal for real-world, battery-powered applications. The power check functions and brownout detector prevent malfunction at or near undervoltage conditions and ensure much higher reliability in harsh environments".

EM Microelectronic's EM6812 is an excellent match for battery- or field-powered applications where extending battery or supply life is vital. Industrial applications include heat cost allocation, field monitoring for temperature/pressure/humidity sensing, utility service meters, timers, smoke detectors, security systems, portable medical equipment and point-of-sale equipment. In consumer applications, the EM6812 is suitable for bodycare, sports equipment and high-tech toys. Automotive applications include tire pressure monitoring, instrument cluster control and comfort control. The EM6812 is also ideal for computer applications such as keyboards, mouse and pointing devices, peripherals and GPS, GSM or Bluetooth-enabled devices.

The EM6812 operates from power supplies ranging from 2V to 5.5V. The 8-level supply voltage level detection (SVLD) feature allows various actions to be taken when voltage reaches certain thresholds, such as stopping a motor to maximize battery life, backing up data or switching to a secondary power supply.

Further, the EM6812 has built-in brownout and powercheck functions that prevent code execution errors during low voltage and slowly ramping power-ups, making it more robust when used with rechargeable batteries, solar cells and capacitor supplies. The device runs up to 10MHz on the internal RC oscillator or can be operated at 32kHz using an external crystal, providing a flexible tradeoff between accuracy, performance and power consumption.

The EM6812 combines the following features:

o Up to 22Kbytes FLASH memory - accommodates complex applications and end-user software features

o 8-bit CoolRISC CPU core - delivers up to 2.5MIPS

o Brownout and powercheck functions

o 8-level SVLD

o Flexible RAM banks: Fully-static, low-power and dual-port

o 16 independently-configurable I/Os: debouncer, pull-up, pull-down, CMOS, Nch open drain

o I/Os can drive up to 20mA at 5V - suitable for high-voltage LEDs and motor drive

o 16 internal registers, 4 subroutine stacks

o 8-bit hardware multiplier - accelerates scaling, math algorithms

o 3-wire Serial Interface SPI, soft UART

o PWM function - ideal for single-slope analog/digital conversion, LED drive

o 4 x 8-bit or 2 x 16-bit timers

o Internal and external IRQ

The EM6812 is available now from EM Microelectronic and its authorized distributors in TSSOP-24 and SO-24 packaging. In order to fit everyone's need perfectly, the FLASH memory comes in three different sizes: 2k x 22 bit, 4k x 22 bit or 8k x 22 bit.

Development tools for the EM6812 include a windows-based emulator, Part Number EME68xx, available from EM Microelectronic. The EME68xx system provides real-time operation, full debug functions, peripheral integration and C-compiler.
