Motorola Extends Microcontroller Family to Enable Portable Applications


Easy-to-use HCS08 devices prolong battery life without compromising performance in handheld applications

AUSTIN, Texas - June 2, 2003 - Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE: MOT) Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) is extending its microcontroller portfolio by introducing the first four members of its 1.8 volt low-power HCS08 family. Other MCUs offer low power at the cost of performance; the 8-bit HCS08 family can exceed the performance of many 16-bit microcontrollers while not compromising low power. Delivering high performance and low power, combined with the HCS08's innovative on-chip debug capability, will help further the company's worldwide 8-bit MCU leadership.

Most low power applications tend to function in a rest or 'sleep' mode until needed, then users expect devices to operate at high performance levels. The HCS08 MCU family was developed for applications such as universal remote control units that sit idle for long periods of time yet must be able to power up quickly and operate at high performance levels upon demand. Other possible applications include handheld instruments, utility meters, security systems and other portable and wireless industrial and consumer devices.

High Performance and Low Power

Unlike other low voltage, low power MCUs, the HCS08 does not sacrifice performance in order to provide low power 1.8 V operation. This allows Motorola to give designers a robust alternative that extends system life of the same batteries typically used today. The HCS08 devices are members of the successful HC08/HC05 MCU family, with more than six billion devices shipped since 1990. They are code-compatible with the nearly 100 HC08 products currently available.

HCS08 Features

- Multiple power management modes, including a 20 nanoamp (nA) power-down mode

- A zero-component auto-wakeup from "stop" to help reduce costs and reduce power to 0.7 microamp (uA)

- Up to 40 MHz CPU/20 MHz bus at 2.1 V and 16 MHz CPU/8 MHz bus at 1.8 V

- A programmable internal clock generator with temperature and voltage compensation (typical drift < 2%) designed for reliable communications, fast start up and reduced system cost

- In-application reprogramming and data storage via third-generation 0.25-micron flash technology

- High integration including four serial communication ports, up to 8 timer/PWMs, and an 8-channel 10-bit analog-to-digital converter specified down to 1.8 V.

Evaluating Battery Life

As part of the introduction of the HCS08 family, Motorola has developed a Battery Life Calculator. Unique to Motorola, this tool helps system designers evaluate available battery power and expected life. The calculator examines these operating and environmental parameters:

- Percentage of time the HCS08 will operate in the different modes

- How often the system will use the analog to digital converter, low-voltage interrupt or real-time interrupt

- How fast the system is running

- The average system operating voltage and temperature

Once the above data is entered, the calculator immediately estimates battery life. The user friendly, interactive software allows engineers to adjust product parameters to maximize system performance. By altering factors like battery sizes, clock speed, etc., designers can immediately realize the impact the changes will have on battery life. Exceptional Support for Faster Development

The new HCS08 devices feature a single-wire background debug mode (BDM) with innovative on-chip emulation, trigger and trace hardware designed to allow low-cost BDM pods or simple serial cables to replace multi-thousand-dollar development tools. Previously, these on-chip features were typically implemented via expensive external hardware.

A battery-operated demonstration board, the M68DEMO908GB60, comes complete with the Metrowerks CodeWarrior(tm) Development Studio for HCS08, Special Edition and demonstration code to help system designers quickly learn the HCS08 MCU family. Metrowerks CodeWarrior also includes Processor Expert(tm) auto-code generator, which is designed to dramatically reduce development time and improve code quality while making it easy to migrate application code to different Motorola MCUs.
