Introducing Micro-RIMs (Remote I/O Modules)

VERY SMALL I/O MODULES ALLOW EASY EXPANSION OF THE SuperIOr® Controller FAMILY

Digital Dynamics, Inc. (DDI) announces the rollout of their very small Micro-RIMs™. Micro-RIMs interface with the SuperIOr Controller system via CAT6 cables and can be as small as 2” x 2.25”. The new, cost effective Micro-RIMs are available with preconfigured I/O or as custom-designed modules and will sell for under $500 each in (100 piece) volume. Good things really do come in small packages!

Micro-RIM modules are available off the shelf with standard I/O configurations such as: 8x8x8x8x2 (8 Digital In/8 Digital Out/8 Analog In/8 Analog Out/2 UARTs) with single or double sided interface connectors, 32 Analog In, and 32 Digital Out. Customer specific configurations and connectors are also available. For interlocking, any number of signals can be routed to any connector pin, eliminating the need for costly custom cabling.

The growing family of Micro-RIMs can be tailored to machine requirements including Digital I/O, Analog I/O, Thermocouples and bi-directional UART communications.

DDI’s industry leading I/O platform, the SuperIOr Controller, is composed of an MCM (Master Control Module) connected to a network of RIMs, allowing distributed I/O control throughout large complex equipment. The MCM can operate under the control of a customer supplied supervisory host computer, or autonomously as the system computer for the entire machine.

The SuperIOr Controller system off-loads much of the high speed control and monitoring load from a supervisory host, and simultaneously manages several thousand mixed-signal inputs and outputs at an 8 kHz scan rate. The system can handle high-speed sequence automation and data monitoring while ensuring system safety integrity through its redundant hardware interlocks.

As many as 16 configurable RIMs in various sizes can be distributed throughout a tool. Each RIM is connected to the MCM with a single CAT6 cable and can be positioned as far as 250 cable feet away. The use of distributed RIMs drastically reduces the complexity of cables needed to connect to sensors and actuators compared to a centralized I/O control system.

Interlocks are electronically configured in dual redundant configuration FPGAs, providing the ultimate in safety interlock integrity. Any number of I/O points in any combination of RIMs can be interlocked. Interlocks can be easily re-configured, substantially reducing hardware design spins traditionally needed to accommodate process changes.
