'On Demand' Micro-Coiler System Provides Coils for Automatic Assembly

To facilitate automatic assembly of very small coils or springs from wire as small as .0015" diameter (40 micron) which may tangle or be damaged in conventional feed units, Kinefac can now provide a unique new "On Demand" Coil Production Unit which will produce micro-coils and transfer the oriented coil into an assembly system. The basic coiling machine is the field proven Micro-Coiler deflection coiling machine which can produce complete, cutoff, coils of variable pitch and diameter as small as .008" in diameter at rates up to 1 per second. The transfer system is based on semi-standard units which are modified and adapted as required to meet the user's requirements.

In the medical coil system shown in the attached picture, the wire is fed to the coiler by an integrated Micro-Dereeler. The coil is formed and cutoff on the Micro-Coiler. The coil is then captured individually and transferred directly by a track, with air assist, to the assembly carrier. The multipocket carrier then moves the coils into the assembly operation at the point of use.

The electronic control panel is separate and can be remotely located. The control screen and keyboard can be positioned as required by the assembly system layout. A hand held cycle controller is provided to facilitate setup, tool change and wire reload. The compact "On Demand" production unit can be mounted on a two position movable platform to position it for setup or assembly operation. An optional swing away microscope, as well as, a microscope TV camera are available for further setup assistance and coiling process monitoring.

With this Kinefac Micro-Coiler "On Demand" system it is now practical to integrate the production and assembly of very small springs and coils into automated assembly systems for the medical device, electronic and instrumentation industries.
