New Scale's Latest Micro-Actuator Module Offers Longer Life, Further Reductions in Size and Power Use

SQL-M-1.8 SQUIGGLE module is a smaller, lower-power alternative to solenoids and DC or stepper motors; targets lock modules and other applications

Victor, NY - February 19, 2008 - New Scale Technologies, Inc. (www.newscaletech.com) has added a smaller, lower-power module to its SQL-M line of SQUIGGLE® micro-actuator modules. Each module incorporates a patented piezoelectric SQUIGGLE motor - the world's smallest linear motor - with optical limit switches in a compact polymer housing. The new SQL-M-1.8 micro-actuator module measures 13.5 x 4.2 x 4.3 mm and uses approximately 300 mW when moving. It is self-locking and uses zero power to hold its position.

This new SQL-M-1.8 module is about 35% smaller than the company's original SQL-M-3.4 model. It also has significantly greater power efficiency, higher speed, and longer lifetime (more than 500,000 cycles).

It is less than half the size of solenoids or stepper motors, draws less power, and offers longer stroke with comparable force. SQL-M Series SQUIGGLE micro-actuator modules can replace solenoids, stepper motors and DC motors in applications where smallest size and lowest power draw are needed.

Flex circuits connect the SQL-M module to a miniature drive card, which can be powered by a 3 V battery and controlled using TTL signals. Motor driver ASICs, under development with austriamicrosystems, will allow the entire motor drive circuit to fit in a 10 x 10 mm footprint.

About New Scale Technologies

New Scale Technologies (www.newscaletech.com) creates disruptively small motion systems based on our patented piezoelectric SQUIGGLE® motor, the world's smallest linear motor. This ultrasonic motor is smaller, more precise, less expensive, more robust and more power-efficient than other micro motors. We create complete motion systems integrating SQUIGGLE motor technology with supporting electronics (ASICs) developed in partnership with austriamicrosystems (www.austriamicrosystems.com).

New Scale's micro motors and micro-actuator modules enable design engineers to create smaller products including mobile phone cameras, electronic locks and intelligent fasteners, nano-scale fluid control including lab-on-a-chip systems, medical devices including miniature drug pumps and endoscopes, optics and imaging systems, automotive modules, lasers, aerospace and defense systems, cryogenic and MRI-compatible instruments, and consumer electronics including micro fuel cells.
