Vishay's New VSMP Ultra-High-Precision, Surface-Mount Bulk Metal® Z Foil Resistors

Are First to Combine Power Ratings up to 750 mW, Long-Term Stability Down to ±0.005%, and Very Low Typical TCR of <±0.2 ppm/°C

MALVERN, Pa. - Jan. 06, 2006 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (VSH: NYSE) today announced the release of the VSMP series of ultra-high-precision, surface-mount Bulk Metal® Z Foil (BMZF) resistors, the industry's first devices to provide high power ratings up to 750 mW at 70 °C with long-term stability down to ±0.005%, very low typical TCR of less than ±0.2 ppm/°C, excellent PCR of ±5 ppm at rated power, and tight tolerance of ±0.01%.

These new resistors are designed for applications in which ultra-precise, ultra-stable, ultra-reliable resistors with an extremely low total error budget are required under load and extreme environmental conditions. The many end products that the VSMP series resistors are intended for include automatic test equipment; high-precision instrumentation; laboratory, industrial, and medical equipment; high-end stereos; electron beam scanning and recording equipment including electron microscopes; and military, space, airborne, and downhole instruments and communications systems.

Vishay's revolutionary Bulk Metal Z Foil technology provides a significant reduction of the resistive component's sensitivity to ambient temperature variations and applied power changes. This breakthrough level of stability, more than an order of magnitude better than that offered by thin film technology, allows designers to guarantee a high degree of accuracy in fixed-resistor applications.

The VSMP series consists of five resistors (including VSMP1206, announced in late 2004) that span a range of surface-mount case sizes from 0805 to 2512, maximum power ratings of 200 mW to 750 mW, and a resistance range of 10 ohms to 150 kohm, with lower and higher values available by request. They achieve excellent load-life stability of ±0.01% at maximum power, and even greater stability of ±0.005% at decreased power.

The VSMP resistors also feature a low thermal EMF of less than 0.05 µV/°C, voltage coefficient below 0.1 ppm/V, inductance lower than 0.08 µH, and response time faster than 1 ns. The noise generated by these resistors is less than -40 dB, or essentially noise-free.

A robust conventional wrap-around termination and top coating ensures safe handling during the mounting process and provides stability during the multiple thermal cyclings the device will experience over its lifetime. Both lead (Pb)-free and tin/lead alloy terminal finishes are available.

Vishay's application engineering department is available to advise customers and make recommendations for non-standard technical requirements and special applications. Matched resistor sets are available by request.

Available in waffle-pack and tape-and-reel packaging, samples and production quantities of the VSMP series of resistors are available now. Lead time for production quantities is four to six weeks, and less on request.
