MemPulse MBR System to Help California City Meet State BNR Requirements

Siemens Water Technologies will be providing the City of Modesto, Calif., with equipment for a 12.6-MGD membrane bioreactor (MBR) system at the city's Jennings Road Water Quality Control (WQC) Facility. Valued at more than US$10 million, the MemPulse MBR equipment will be incorporated into the City's Phase 2 biological nutrient removal (BNR)/Tertiary Treatment Project (Phase 2) to meet new state discharge permit requirements.

The Phase 2 design, which includes six membrane tanks each with 448 membrane modules, was selected on 20-year lifecycle value. The MBR equipment furnished by Siemens is an integral component of the Phase 2 plant expansion, expected to be operational by early 2016.

Siemens is teaming with the city and Carollo Engineers (Walnut Creek, Calif.), which has responsibility for the overall BNR solution for the city.

The MemPulse MBR equipment features air scouring technology, which significantly reduces energy consumption by lowering the amount of air required for membrane cleaning. The MemPulse device does not contain any moving parts, decreasing the likelihood of mechanical system failures and making it a desirable simple and efficient solution. Once constructed, the Jennings Road WQC facility will be the largest MBR installation in North America and the second largest worldwide, to use Siemens' equipment.
