Avery Dennison Medical Solutions Introduces PVC, PVdC and Plasticizer Free Intelishield(TM) Barrier Film for Ostomy Applications

New Film's Antimicrobial Inner Surface Helps Control Odor, Additional Layers Provide Enhanced Strength and Secure Bonding

CHICAGO - A new barrier film for ostomy applications constructed of novel materials and designed for user confidence and comfort is now available from Avery Dennison Medical Solutions, a business unit of Avery Dennison Corporation (NYSE: AVY). The Avery Dennison® InteliShield(TM)Barrier Film is PVC, PVdC and plasticizer free, which makes it less damaging to the environment than traditional films and provides manufacturers with more cost-effective disposal of intermediate scrap.

InteliShield Barrier Film features an antimicrobial inner surface, while additional layers deliver enhanced strength and secure bonding. It also durable against ripping or tearing-ostomy bags made with the film passed the industry standard burst test ISO/DIN 86760-2.

"Traditional ostomy films are soft, flexible and quiet because they use environmentally damaging plasticizers, such as DEHP," explains Kevin Jones, global market segment manager, Avery Dennison Medical Solutions. "InteliShield Barrier Film uses a unique combination of plastics that produce these properties without plasticizers. The film has demonstrated softness, flexibility and quietness comparable to existing films."

Antimicrobial Action
In-vitro testing demonstrates that the non-leaching antimicrobial agent in the InteliShield Barrier Film can quickly kill bacteria, which may help reduce odor. The testing also demonstrates that the antimicrobial agent stays within the film structure, remains active as the bag fills and will not enter the body via the stoma or leach into the bag contents.

Controls Odor
The InteliShield Barrier Film incorporates two odor blocking technologies. There is a traditional small molecule barrier that blocks passage due to molecule size as well as a second layer that blocks larger molecules within the structure of the film. This combination provides more comprehensive odor control than either technology alone.

Easily Sealed
The film can be sealed using common techniques such as heat, heat impulse or RF welding. This gives manufacturers the ability to choose the technique that is best for the final product.
