Media Converter can be remotely managed.

Press Release Summary:

Suited for point-to-point implementations, Transport MUX can transport multiple T1/E1 lines, 10/100 Ethernet, and RS232 Data Channel over single pair of fiber or single fiber strand. It provides copper connections compatible with G.703, AMI/B8ZS/HDB3, 10/100BASE-TX, as well as RS232 channel; while optical channel will run at 155 Mbps. If fault condition occurs, Automatic Link Restoration ensures that no user intervention is required to bring link back up again.

Transition Networks Unveils Remotely-Managed Transport MUX

Media Converter Carries Four T1 or E1, Ethernet and Data Channel over Single Fiber

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 25 - The conversion technology expert, Transition Networks Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems, Inc., today announced its new remotely-managed media converter capable of transporting multiple T1/E1 lines, 10/100 Ethernet and RS232 Data Channel over a single pair of fiber or a single fiber strand. Transition's Transport MUX is designed to address the needs of FTTx, such as Fiber-to-the-Business, Fiber-to-the-Building, Fiber-to-the-MDU and Fiber-to-the-Home. With the new remotely-managed converter, providers are able to achieve significant cost savings within the network by limiting the number of fiber runs required and increasing the level of integrated hands-on management control over each link in the system.

The Transport MUX will provide copper connections compatible with G.703, AMI/B8ZS/HDB3, 10/100BASE-TX, as well as the RS232 channel; while the optical connection will run at 155Mbps. This design also assures that TDM traffic is not mapped to Ethernet. The hardware-based solution guarantees the constant bit rate of TDM transport without requiring traffic management.

"Service providers are seeking improvements to provide cost-effective and highly functional data services over the minimum amount of costly fiber -- regardless of the number of data connections. In today's networks, lower port density applications require similar attention to cost and efficiency as larger systems. Our new media converter enables providers to do just that," said Bill Schultz, vice president of marketing at Transition Networks.

Product Features

The products are designed for point-to-point implementations. The transport MUX features a secure and In-Band remote management for each separate channel in the link. The providers can remotely manage each of four T1 or E1, 10/100Base-TX Ethernet and RS232 Data channels. Each T1/E1 channel has its own remote or local loopback, Line Build-out, AIS, TAOS and dry relay contacts. For additional monitoring and troubleshooting, one T1/E1 port can be used as a Port Tap to mirror any of the three remaining T1/E1 ports.

10/100 Ethernet port provides a full 10/100Base-TX compatibility and supports Auto-Negotiation, Autocross (automatic MDI/MDI-X), Transparent Link Pass Through Link notification feature, and Pause. In addition to standard 10/100 features, this remotely managed 10/100 port allows service providers to throttle bandwidth, use local and remote loopback and enable or disable any of the above features via SNMP management or dip-switches.

The product also provides an extensive status monitoring, reporting and alarm classification functions. One of the most important features on Transition Media converters is Automatic Link Restoration. This feature makes sure that once the fault condition is removed no user intervention is ever required to bring the entire link back up again.

Product Configuration

Transition's remotely managed Transport MUX media converter is available in two versions. Version one (x4TDM10xx-1xx) will include all four T1/E1 channels, and RS232 data channel over a pair or strand of fiber. Version two (x4TEF10xx-1xx) will offer similar functionality Plus additional 10/100Base-TX Ethernet channel all over a pair or strand of fiber.

Each version is available in either Chassis Card or Standalone Form Factors.

Product Availability

The Transport Mux models will be available in January. Please contact Transition Networks at (800)526-9267 or www.transition.com/ for the latest information.
