Measuring Coastal Slope Movements from the Air

Carlos  Gonzales  from  3D  Laser  Mapping  will  explore  the  capabilities  of  combining  airborne  laser scanning and photography as an approach to measure coastal slope movements, during his talk at MMT in Sydney, Australia. (9-11th December, 2015)

Successful  measurement  of  coastal  areas  is  crucial  to  determine  the  potential  impact  upon  local infrastructure, and to take action accordingly. Finding a reliable system to get these measurements is then also of equal importance.

The  insights  included  in  the  presentation  are  based  around  a  case  study  from  a  section  of  North Yorkshire coast in the UK. The customer is Durham University, who is using the SiteMonitor solution for efficient monitoring, outside of a mining context. Here, laser and photographic data is captured at the same time during two airborne surveys, performed approximately nine months apart.

Carlos will discuss the two main techniques currently used for coastal monitoring (laser scanning and photographic  surveys) noting their individual advantages and limitations. Through combining surface elevation changes derived from laser  data and displacement velocities calculated from images, it is possible to quantify both the volume of displaced material and the rate and direction of displacement.

Come  along  at  2:45pm  (Mathews  Theatre  C)  on  Friday  11th  December  to  hear  the  fascinating demonstration of airborne laser scanning and photography working together to provide comprehensive measurements of slope instability.
