Measurement Specialties Awarded PCB Design Prize

Measurement Specialties (MEAS), a worldwide leading manufacturer and pioneer in the development of sensors and sensor based systems, wins second prize in the category of 3D construction at the PCB Design Award during the 20th jubilee of the German Association for Design and Production of Printed Boards and Electronics (FED) at Dresden.

Reinhold Pieper, System Engineer with Measurement Specialties, developed a sensor arrangement that detects and evaluates local magnetic fields typically found on security documents. This application not only requires an extraordinary lateral resolution and powerful noise suppression, but calls for a processing rate of 400 kHz and three-dimensional integration of permanent-magnetic fields to activate corresponding structures on the inspected objects.

The PCB Design Award in Germany was initiated to support enterprises creating new board designs and will serve as a stimulus for hardware development throughout Europe. The design of printed circuits and assemblies is an essential link between basic electronic research and large scale production. Contributions from many technologies (circuit construction, arrangement of boards, automatic placement, soldering process and testing procedures), companies and participating engineers are reflected in this award.

Measurement Specialties, Inc. produces a wide variety of sensors and transducers to measure precise ranges of physical characteristics such as pressure, force, vibration, torque, position, temperature, humidity, fluid properties, mass air flow and photo optics. Measurement Specialties uses multiple advanced technologies - including piezo-resistive, electro-optic, electro-magnetic, variable reluctance, magneto resistive, digital encoders, thermistors, thermocouples, RTDs, capacitive, resonant beam, application specific integrated circuits (ASICs), micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), piezoelectric polymers and strain gauges to engineer sensors that operate accurately and cost-effectively in customers' applications.
