MDS Products Earn Acceptance by USDA Rural Utilities Services Program

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (March 13, 2006) - Microwave Data Systems (MDS), a world leader in industrial, wireless, networking solutions with applications in the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), automation, telecommunications, public safety, and online transactional markets, today announced the acceptance of several of its products by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Utilities Services (RUS) Program.

The RUS Program provides financial, technical and other support functions to help rural communities in America to expand and keep their technologies current.

The accepted MDS products include two of the company's licensed radios--the MDS LEDR 700 and LEDR 900-which are typically used for point-to-point applications, such as wireless backbones for SCADA systems and as backhaul to extend existing telecommunications channels.

Also accepted, are the license-free MDS iNET 900TM and MDS iNET II networking solutions, which provide long-range wireless Ethernet; and the MDS Five Series transceivers used for backhaul and connecting buildings and campuses.

Under the rural development utilities program, the USDA works with rural cooperatives, non-profit associations, public bodies and for-profit utilities to provide, maintain and update essential services and utilities like electric, telecommunications (along with distance learning and telemedicine), water and the environment, in rural America.
