Fujitsu Microelectronics Now Offering New, Low-Pin-Count 8-Bit Flash MCU Family, Ideal for Cost-Sensitive Consumer Appliance Applications

MB95200 series delivers fast processing, low power consumption, integrated high-precision clocks with complete software development environment

SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 15 / / - Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today introduced a new, low-pin-count series of 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) designed for cost-sensitive consumer applications in the Americas.

The MB95200 series is an extension of the popular Fujitsu F2MC-8FX family of 8-bit microcontrollers. The new series includes a complete range of single-chip standard microcontrollers with between 8 and 24 pins, powered by an optimized core and featuring low-leakage technology and embedded flash. Fast processing capabilities and low power consumption position the MB95200 series as an excellent design choice for appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, ovens, smoke detectors, vacuum cleaners and air conditioning units. The MCUs are also ideal for cordless phones and remote controls, shavers and other handheld consumer products, as well as aftermarket automotive accessories. The key features of the product include the following:

High-performance flash memory - The microcontrollers are embedded with Fujitsu's high-reliability, high-performance flash memory that can be rewritten 100,000 times and is guaranteed to hold data for 20 years. A flash security function protects the customer's software from being read by unauthorized external programs.

Dual-operation flash memory - The MCUs include Fujitsu Microelectronics' proprietary embedded dual-operation flash memory, which emulates E2PROM. The memory contains two regions, one for program storage, and the other for data storage. Because it acts as a substitute for E2PROM, the dual operation flash memory eliminates the need for external E2PROM, reducing system area and system cost. (MB95260/270/280 Series).

Embedded peripheral parts result in lower costs - The internal CR oscillating circuit (that runs the operating clock) and the low-voltage detection circuit (that detects a drop in voltage) are built into the microcontrollers. This level of integration eliminates the need for an external oscillator and reset IC, contributing to a reduction in overall system costs.

Composite timer provides flexibility for system requirements - In the embedded "composite timer," a channel can be selected from any one of the following, depending on the program: pulse width modulation (PWM), pulse width counter (PWC), interval timer or input capture. The latter measures interval times, enabling the flexibility needed to handle varying system requirements.

"The Fujitsu MB95200 series combines the proven performance of the F2MC-8FX family with low power consumption and pin counts," said Dean Chang, senior product marketing manager, Fujitsu Microelectronics. "These MCUs are excellent design choices for consumer products that can take advantage of the products' high reliability and excellent security. We are also providing a low-cost development environment with on-chip debugging tools and complimentary C-language IDE SOFTUNE design kits and tools, which makes working with this new series easy and productive."

The complete debug system platform consists of SOFTUNE, the MB95200 series MCU, and user board in a compact BGMA that measures just 128mm x 55mm x 29mm. To help developers use the MCUs and design environment, complete support is available on the web with datasheets, manuals, application notes, example software and a C-library.
