MC Assembly Meets Growing Demand with Universal Instruments' Genesis Series 2

MC Assembly(TM) has integrated multiple Universal Instruments Genesis Series 2 Platform production lines, to include Universal's Dimensions® Line-level Software Suite to proactively monitor and maximize production efficiency. This newest acquisition continues a lasting collaboration between the two companies and expands MC Assembly's services offering by benefiting from the improved board size, part range and yield capabilities of the Genesis Series 2 portfolio.

MC Assembly is a major Tier 2 EMS provider catering to a wide variety of customers with a primary focus on low- to medium-volume, high-complexity industrial, medical and aerospace/defense electronics applications. MC Assembly supports its customer base with a full range of services designed to add value throughout the product life cycle. These include design for manufacturability and test, supply chain management, warranty and repair work, test development, surface mount and through-hole board builds, NPI and full systems integration. To accommodate its growing business, MC Assembly needed to expand its output capabilities and advance the technology of its production equipment set. "It was time to take the next step in our company's development and we were confident that Universal would help us achieve that," says Jim Roche, Vice President of Engineering. "Although Universal was the incumbent as our primary equipment supplier, we conducted an exhaustive 18-month process of evaluating the leaders in surface mount assembly equipment before choosing our new equipment. Once again, Universal proved the winner. The new Genesis Series 2 lineup features Vertical Part Sense to improve yields, large board capability up to 1016mm and an expanded part range. These are valuable assets to our versatility and productivity."

MC Assembly purchased multiple Genesis Series 2 production lines comprised of GC-60D, GI- 14D and GX-11S Platforms. In addition, the company acquired Universal's Dimensions Line Manager software to maximize production efficiency and streamline changeover, and Linechart to monitor and enhance key performance metrics. Universal's Vice President of Sales, Brad Bennett states, "MC Assembly provided an ideal opportunity for Universal to act as a complete solutions provider, addressing their business needs as a whole. While the equipment capabilities were very important to them, it was equally critical to facilitate a smooth transition to new capabilities and to quickly establish optimized processes that could be replicated in all of their production environments."

MC Assembly Vice President of Operations, Rick Price, comments on choosing Universal, "Not only was the technology superior, but Universal provided us a comprehensive solution to address all our needs. The Dimensions software provides us easy-to-use tools for traceability, process optimization and materials management. We were also very happy to have Universal implement a Site Management Program to personally support us and enable a smooth integration from our legacy equipment. This is extremely important to us in order to uphold the copy-exact practices we embrace across multiple facilities." Price adds, "Universal further strengthened this partnership by offering to host two Kaizen events to promote continuous improvement in our production and changeover processes, as well as examine and minimize our rate of component attrition."
