MBX's GPU Expertise Trims Hardware Costs and Size for Video and Broadcast Applications

Hardware Builder Showcases Platform Engineering & TCO Benefits at NAB Booth #SL14616

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. - MBX Systems, a leading manufacturer of custom OEM server appliances and storage solutions, announced today that it has successfully utilized both standalone and embedded graphics processing units (GPUs) to lower the total cost of hardware ownership as well as increase performance for video and broadcast application providers that deploy their solutions on purpose-built servers. MBX's ability to properly specify GPU needs for each application has enabled customers to reduce thermal output, power requirements, overall system costs and even chassis size for easier deployment in end user environments.

One MBX hardware platform designed for a video streaming vendor yielded a 40% savings per unit by replacing a low-end add-in GPU with an integrated GPU/CPU solution that also simplified the design to improve reliability. Another platform engineered for a video analytics system reduced the size from a tower chassis to a smaller form factor and simultaneously reduced both the heat and power load.

GPU solutions used by MBX platform engineers include offerings from Intel, NVIDIA and AMD as well as integrated Supermicro GPU-optimized systems, depending on the needs of the specific video application. Supermicro's 1027GR-T Series GPU SuperServer, for example, incorporates three double-wide GPUs in a 1U form factor providing processing power that would ordinarily require a 3U footprint.

"GPUs enable video applications to work smarter because of their massively parallel processing capabilities, yet few vendors are currently taking full advantage of GPU technology because of the need for expertise to rewrite and optimize their code. That's a short-sighted view that can unnecessarily increase system costs for comparable performance and also weaken competitive advantage," said Jeff Luckett, MBX Director of Engineering. "For many applications, moving to smarter GPU-based computation methods can avoid upgrading to a high-end CPU that costs more and lacks the power, thermal, space, cost and flexibility benefits of today's off-the-shelf GPU solutions."

In addition to engineering design and manufacturing of fully customized hardware platforms that optimize the performance of the customer's software, MBX offers value-added services including software imaging, custom BIOS loading, custom branding, drop-shipping to end customers, international logistics, and inventory management. Systems are manufactured exclusively in the U.S. and supported globally.

MBX is exhibiting in Booth #SL14616 (South Hall, Lower) at the 2014 NAB Show that opens next Monday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
