MaxLite Illuminates Children's Lives at Mooseheart Residential Childcare Facility

The Challenges
Located just west of Chicago, Illinois, Mooseheart Child City and School, a residential childcare facility that is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2013, comprises 29 residences and 20 support buildings. The campus was retrofitting inefficient lighting fixtures in its buildings throughout campus, including each of the residences that serve as a home for six to 12 children in need.
The Solution
In the recreational areas of the residences, the facility replaced 912 T12 fluorescent lamps in existing 1’x4’ Wraps and 2’x2’ and 2’x4’ Lay-In fixtures with 700 of MaxLite’s Watt Saver T8 Extended Fluorescent Linear Lamps in 5000K correlated color temperatures (CCTs). In fixtures and table lamps in the basements, 182 60-watt incandescent lamps were replaced with 182 of MaxLite’s ENERGY STAR®-qualified 13-watt SpiraMax Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs). Finally, in the service areas and kitchens, approximately 40 T12 strip fluorescent lamps were replaced with the same quantity of MaxLite’s four foot T8 Fluorescent Lamps and new electronic ballasts.
The Benefits
MaxLite helped Mooseheart retrofit 962 lighting fixtures with 1,634 energy efficient fluorescent lamps and 818 ballasts, reducing the kilowatt hour per month from 27,000 to 10,000 and the kilowatt demand from 105 to 40. Mooseheart received $46,583 from utility rebates and grants on this project and is currently experiencing an annual energy savings of $14,500.
