Material Highlight: Closed Cell Sponge Rubber

Closed cell sponge rubber. Enticing subject, isn’t it?  I can assure you it is a lot more interesting than it sounds. SRP does a ton of work with closed cell sponge because it is a highly convertible material that is incredibly easy to work with.  So, we thought we would share a few facts and specifications to help aid some folks when it comes to choosing the right materials.  This could be the right one for you.

Closed cell sponge rubber is defined as a product whose cells are completely enclosed by its walls without interconnecting with other cells. This unique physical property enables closed cell rubber to function as an excellent seal for moisture, dust, air, gas, smoke, noise, liquids, oil and the list goes on.

Closed cell sponge offers cost effective gasketing and sealing solutions for a wide variety of applications including: automotive gaskets, lighting gaskets, door frame gaskets, window gaskets, enclosure gaskets, appliance gaskets, telecommunications cabinet gaskets, weather stripping, and gap fillers. These types of sponge are extremely impermeable to water, and good choices for shock absorption, weather sealing and thermal barriers. Pressure Sensitive Adhesive can be applied to all closed cell sponge materials.

Listed below are the various types of closed cell sponge:

Closed Cell Neoprene Sponge Rubber

Available Thickness: 1/16” – 1”

Available Density: Soft to Firm

Temperature Range: -40°F to 150°F

Flammability Specs: FMVSS-302, UL 94 HF-1 (SCE43NEO Only)

Color: Black

Closed cell neoprene sponge products will resist light, oil contact, ozone, alkalis and acids, making them ideal for various types of enclosure gaskets.

Closed Cell Neoprene/EPDM/SBR Blend Sponge Rubber

Available Thickness: 1/16” – 1”

Available Density: Soft to Firm

Temperature Range: -40°F to 200°F

Flammability Specs: FMVSS-302, UL 94 HF-1

Color: Black

This closed cell sponge is produced from a Neoprene/EPDM/SBR blend, and is used to make a general-purpose gasket for a variety of applications, including commercial. This blend is not as resistant to oils and liquids compared to the neoprene sponge.

Data Sheets: SCE41B, SCE42B, SCE43B, SCE45B

Closed Cell EPDM Blend Sponge Rubber

Available Thickness: 1/16” – 1”

Available Density: Soft to Firm

Temperature Range: -40°F to 200°F

Flammability Specs: FMVSS-302

Color: Black

Closed cell EPDM blend sponge materials are great for outdoor applications, and have excellent resistance to alkalis, acids, ozone, and oxidization. However, this EPDM blend sponge has poor resistance to oil and gasoline.

Data Sheets: RE41E, RE42E, RE43E, RE45E

Closed Cell ECH Sponge Rubber

Available Thickness: 1/16” – 1”

Available Density: 15 pcf

Temperature Range: -40°F to 325°F

Flammability Specs: FMVSS-302

Color: Black

Epichlorohydrin’s (ECH) primary characteristics are resistance to swell when exposed to fuel and high temperatures. ECH also has very good resistance to weather, ozone, sunlight, and oxidation.

Data Sheets: C41ECH, C42ECH

Ensolite Neoprene/PVC/Nitrile Blend

Available Thickness: 1/16” – 1”

Available Density: Soft to Firm

Temperature Range: -40°F to 200°F

Flammability Specs: FMVSS-302, FAR 25.853, UL 94 HF-1, UL94 V0, V1

Color: Black

Ensolite is a blend of PVC/Nitrile/Neoprene material manufactured by Armacell LLC. This premier, high-performance, elastomeric closed-cell foam is engineered to meet specific design considerations for fabricated products.

Data Sheets: ENSOLITE IV1, ENSOLITE IV2, ENSOLITE IV3
