Material Highlight: 3M Thermally Conductive Adhesive Transfer Tape

3M Thermal Adhesive Tapes provide excellent long-term reliability, electrical insulation and flame retardant performance. 3M's highest mechanical strength, thermally conductive tapes feature excellent adhesion properties, improved surface wet out, and excellent shock performance.

There are four types of 3M Thermally Conductive Adhesive Transfer Tapes including: 8805 (5 mil), 8810 (10 mil), 8815 (15 mil), and 8820 (20 mil). Each are designed to provide a preferential heat-transfer path between heat-generating components and heat sinks or other cooling devices (e.g., fans, heat spreaders or heat pipes)

Benefits of 3M Thermally Conductive Adhesive Transfer Tapes:

Productivity

• Tapes bond with light pressure and have immediate tack

• Avoid the mess, hassle and cost of greases and clips

• Eliminate long cure times and fixturing of liquid adhesives

• Can be die-cut and pre-applied to one surface for later bonding

Reliability

• High mechanical strength for securely attaching heat sinks and heat spreaders

• Elastomeric properties of adhesive provide excellent shock performance

• High dielectric strength provides electrical isolation

• Tape provides high degree of thickness control

Performance

• Improved surface wet out lowers thermal impedance

• Pure adhesive film construction means no carrier to hinder gap filling

• No carrier also means fewer material interfaces, a leading cause of poor thermal performance

Typical applications include:

• IC Packaging Heat Conduction

• Heat sink-Thermal Interface Attachment

• Battery Thermal Management

• LED Lighting Thermal Management

• Heat sink-Thermal Interface-Non Bonding

• Flex Bonding

• Thermal Interface-Damping-Cushioning‎
