Error-Proof Identification with Hot Stamp Bumpy Bar Code
Auto Tech 2002. Mecco Marking & Traceability provides a marking solution to manufacturers of airbag covers in various colors at a truck plant. To assure that each is matched to the correct vehicle during assembly, a 3-D "bumpy" bar code ID mark is stamped into the vinyl.
Dimensional or "bumpy" bar coding, as a means of error-proofing assembly processes, is used to track automotive interior and Powertrain parts, also catalytic converters and plastic bumpers, and to protect high-value production assets.
Bumpy Bar Code imbeds a bar code onto virtually any metal, plastic, or rubber material or product using one or several methods. One customer presents sheets of 0.8 mm gage vinyl to the die. Slightly heated bumpy bar code dies mark the material's edges in a process lasting less than four seconds. The 3-D mark is 10 mils in depth.
Mecco Marking & Traceability certifies and supplies the engraved bumpy bar code dies, as well as the custom-engineered die wheel, which fixtures four dies. The latter is tied to a color-sensing PLC which instructs the device which die mold to use for which color.
Before instrument panels are shipped, and after their receipt at the assembly factory, the bumpy bar code mark is read with a model 1410 hand-held scanner. The scanner employs both laser and CCD technology to read the depth and contrast of the mark. Notably, the scanner reads both bumpy bar codes and traditional printed labels, so facilities that use both technologies get double functionality from this new scanner technology.
