Makino Adds HMC to 1-Series Family

a81 HMC Employs 50 Taper Spindle and 630 mm Pallet

MASON, OH-August, 2002-Makino is introducing the competitively-priced a81 horizontal machining center (HMC) at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in September. Dedicated to helping manufacturers drive costs out of their operations, the Makino a81 features the largest pallet yet in the 1-series line, providing unparalleled productivity and reliability for 630 mm pallet HMCs.

Following the successful introductions of the a51 and a71, Makino's a81 is ideal for manufacturing applications that require less precision but the same throughput and reliability of Makino' s premiere A-series machines.

"The a81 fills another niche in the vast market of high-speed machining," Makino President Don Lane says. "It broadens the Makino 1-series that is positioned as a line of value-oriented HMCs equipped with advanced technology. The a81 is a top-notch machine designed to drive out long-term manufacturing costs."

a81 Benefits and Features
The Makino a81 is loaded with features that help manufacturers decrease operational costs, including swift axis movement and faster spindle acceleration/deceleration than other HMCs. Out-of-cut time is diminished because of the machine's standard ring-type, 40-tool magazine with short seek times. This is complemented by a quick automatic tool changer that has a fast tool-to-tool (1.7 seconds) time.

Makino's a81 surpasses the a71 as the largest in the 1-series line. It is capable of handling a payload of 3,300 pounds (1,500 kg). It is fitted with a 25.2-inch (630-mm) pallet and a standard 50 taper, 10,000-rpm spindle with exceptional acceleration characteristics and minimal vibration. The spindle is equipped with a 300-psi through-spindle coolant system.

Rapid traverse rate of the a81 exceeds other 1-series machines at 2,362 ipm (60 m/min). Cutting feedrate also is 2,362 ipm (60 m/min), facilitating high-speed machining to reduce cycle time. The a81 is capable of simultaneous B-axis movement with tool change and X-, Y-, Z-axis travel of 36 x 32 x 36 inches (900 x 800 x 900 mm).

The a81's footprint is 138 inches wide x 215 inches deep (3,460 x 5,370 mm), which is more compact than competitive machines and designed for easy maintenance access around the entire perimeter. High-volume chip evacuation is facilitated by a wide-center trough with a standard rear discharge lift up chip conveyor that includes a coolant leakage protection design.

Other features include an automatic pallet changer with safety guard, a standard three-point support system, an ergonomic swing operator control panel, a safety-designed four-layer protective operator door window and flood coolant and overhead shower coolant.

The a81 comes standard with Makino's proprietary, next generation Geometric Intelligence (GI) servo control with Radical Mode. GI helps provide the lowest cycle times achievable, while maintaining accuracy and meeting the customer's Cpk requirements.

Makino now offers three machine solutions to a customer base with diverse needs:

o 1-series for medium- to high-volume production shops, first- and second-tier automotive parts suppliers and general contract machining operations;
o A-series for high accuracy and maximum flexibility of cutting materials;
o J-series for high volume production automotive parts applications.
