Mikron Introduces UCP 1150 High Performance Machining Center for Five-Axis, Simultaneous Machining of Large Workpieces

New Generation Machining Center Offers Higher Feed Rates, Greater Travel Ranges and Extensive Choice of High-Torque Motor Spindles

HOLLISTON, Mass., Oct. 2, 2003 -Mikron has recently announced the
availability of the newest development in its series of high performance machining centers. The Mikron UCP 1150 delivers simultaneous five-axis machining with a highly versatile, tilting milling head and an exceptionally fast and accurate heavy load rotary table. The dynamic machining capabilities of the UCP 1150 are the result of proven designs established by the well-known Mikron UCP 1000 and the innovative Mikron
UCP 1350.

Based on a refined cross-bed construction to ensure large axis movements with unrestricted access, the UCP 1150 features a highly stable, low-vibration base structure. Its generously dimensioned guideways and drives ensure exceptional precision and
surface quality for workpieces.

The unique construction of the robust milling head with integrated motor spindle allows for spindle rotation up to 135 degrees. Additionally, the swivel axis can be rotated simultaneously or indexed degree by degree to make precise use of the high torque ability of the spindle motor.

The UCP 1150 can be switched from a vertical to a horizontal machining process in 1.7 seconds to provide a wide range of machining capabilities, including producing undercuts. Five-sided or five-axis simultaneous machining can be achieved in one
single set up to accommodate applications ranging from heavy roughing operations to highly accurate, five-axis simultaneous machining of complex turbine blades.

The UCP 1150 offers spindle choices of 12,000, 15,000 or 24,000 rpm.

The dynamic performance and precision required for multi-axis machining is achieved using linear motor technology for the rotary axis. The design and construction of the UCP 1150 features a highly accurate 1,000 mm (39.4") diameter rotary/tilt table that can handle loads up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs.) with a rotational speed up to 40 rpm.

The UCP 1150 is supplied with a heavy-duty tool changer system installed outside the work area to provide flexibility and process reliability while reducing tool-changing time. An integrated 30-position tool magazine is standard. An optional
46/92-position tool magazine is available.

The UCP 1150 is equipped with the powerful, state-of-the art Heidenhain iTNC 530 control system to enhance performance. The optimal arrangement of the UCP 1150 operating panel allows for monitoring of the controls, tool changer and the machining
process from one location.
