Low-Distortion MLCCs are offered in EIA 0402 case size.

Press Release Summary:

Measuring 1.0 x 0.5 x 0.5 mm, CFCAP® surface-mount multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) offer stability against voltage, mechanical shocks, and other external energy surges. They provide alternative to SMD plastic film capacitors with operating temperature range of -55 to +125°C. Offered in 9 models, series provides dc voltage ratings of 10, 16, and 25 V as well as capacitance values from 1,000-4,700 pF, depending on model.

Taiyo Yuden Adds 0402 Case Size to its Line of Super Low Distortion MLCCs; Smaller, More Reliable than Smallest Film Capacitors in 0603

SCHAUMBURG, IL-January 13, 2005-TAIYO YUDEN (U.S.A.), Inc. announces the addition of a new, ultra-small EIA 0402 case size (1.0 x 0.5 x 0.5 mm) to its popular CFCAP. line of super low distortion surface-mount multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC). Designed for high-frequency applications, CFCAP MLCCs provide a smaller, lower cost, more reliable alternative to SMD plastic film capacitors. The new 0402 case size, smaller than the smallest available film capacitors (0603) while offering comparable electrical characteristics, are particularly well suited for use in PLL (phase locked loop) and filter coupling circuits in mobile phones and other ultra-portable devices. In addition to their size advantage over SMDs, CFCAP MLCCs offer superior stability against voltage, heat, mechanical shocks and other external energy surges. The nine available models in the series provide, depending on model selected, DC voltage ratings of 10V, 16V and 25V; and capacitance values ranging from 1000pF to 4700pF.

Low-distortion CFCAP capacitors offer superior component reliability when compared to SMD plastic film caps due to the former's stronger thermal shock and mechanical stress withstand capabilities. Film capacitors do not stand up well to high temperatures that accompany replacement of parts. By contrast, CFCAP MLCCs offer superior thermal resistance and a broad operating temperature range of -55C to +125C. Moreover, all series devices generate minimal noise when subjected to shocks, and provide greater stability and higher insulation resistance. Breakdown voltage for the CFCAP series is about 10 ten times better than equivalent size plastic film capacitors.

TAIYO YUDEN's high-precision multi-layering techniques, combined with a new composition dieletric material, have resulted in a number of performance advantages. The CFCAP MLCC dielectric material is composed of a cubic (CaZrO3) molecular structure that achieves higher capacitance values than typical Class 1 temperature compensating capacitors, while offering superior temperature stability and lower ESR than tetragonal (BaTiO3) based chemistries used in TAIYO YUDEN's series of high capacitance capacitors. Cost reduction and reliability are enhanced by use of base metal (Nickel) throughout, for both the internal and external electrodes.

Available in mass production quantities of 5M units per month by September 2004, production volume is projected to reach 50M units per month by March 2005.
