Load Cell Design Service suits custom OEM applications.

Press Release Summary:

Utilizing Microfused(TM) force technology (glass-bonded piezo-resistive silicon strain gage technology), service develops industrial load cells for customized OEM applications. Sensors feature one-piece stainless steel construction with glass fused (bonded) silicon to one side of metal diaphragm. This enables direct contact with environmentally harsh media on other side of sensor.

MSI Sensors Launches New Load Cell Capability for Highly Customized OEM Applications

Detroit, Michigan, June 8, 2004 - MSI Sensors, a division of Measurement Specialties Inc. (AMEX: MSS) Microfused(TM) brand has introduced a new program that will develop industrial load cells for highly customized OEM applications, an MSI spokesman announced today.

"MSI's Microfused force technology is perfectly suited for customized applications," said MSI Director, Global Sales and Marketing, Glen MacGibbon, based upon the millions of load cells the company sells every year into the consumer bathroom scale market.

"We feel that offering this new capability opens up a variety of new and unique applications that have been extremely difficult to deal with or always required undesirable sacrifices," MacGibbon said.

MSI Sensors is the world leader in the glass-bonded piezo-resistive silicon strain gage technology known as Microfused(TM). The company has been well-known in the industrial sensors market for the technology, which features pressure sensors that are hermetically sealed. MSI Microfused(TM) sensors feature one-piece stainless steel construction with glass fused (bonded) silicon to one side of a metal diaphragm, enabling direct contact with environmentally harsh media on the other side of a sensor.

This exact same principle can be applied to a force-bearing member to create load cells, said MacGibbon. However, since these loads cells can be extremely small in size, and very sensitive in terms of electrical output/force, an important factor is their cost-effectiveness for high volume applications.

"Over the years we have had many customers ask for solutions to problems," said MacGibbon," but we didn't have the resources or effective technology to address them. We always thought with a little extra packaging effort we could tackle them. Now we've been able to put together a focused development team head by the company's original founder, Damon Germanton, to address these unique force applications. What were finding is there is a tremendous need for tension, compression, and a combination of both tension and compression for highly specialized environments. Particularly for highly accurate long-lasting applications."

Measurement Specialties (AMEX: MSS), designs, develops, produces, and sells electronic sensors and sensor-based consumer products. Consumer products include tire pressure gauges, parking aids, and distance estimators. Industrial products include sensors for high volume, OEM applications. MSI Sensors' products employ specialized application specific integrated circuits (ASICs), and diverse sensor technologies based on micromachining (the three-dimensional sculpting of silicon), MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems), force balance, strain gage, capacitive, inductive, piezoresisitive micromachined, and piezopolymer film, which provide accurate and efficient measurement, resolution and display of ranges of distance, motion, fluid level, force, displacement, angle, or pressure.
