Tiny Linux Computer Transmits via GPRS

Communication in industrial environments is becoming increasingly more varied. An Ethernet interface and some UARTs - the typical standard interfaces of many embedded systems - are often not enough any more. SSV Embedded Systems has specially developed the DIL/NetPC DNP/9200 and the DNP/EVA9 evaluation board for complex industrial communication. In addition to Ethernet, UART, SPI, SSI/I2C and USB, the assembly supports GPRS radio links over GSM mobile phone networks.

The DNP/9200 is based on a 32-bit AT91RM9200 ARM9 microcontroller from Atmel running at 180 MHz with 16MB Flash and 32MB SDRAM. Two UARTs, SPI, SSI/I2C, USB host and USB device, a flexible 8-bit Bus interface and 20 universal GPIO signals are available as interfaces. There is also a 10/100Mbps Ethernet LAN interface. The proven DIL-64 format serves as a mechanical form factor, also ensuring compatibility with other DIL/NetPC family members.

In addition to the DIL-64 slot for the DIL/NetPC DNP/9200, the DNP/EVA9 evaluation board also offers two USB, one Ethernet and two RS232 connectors. There is also a dock for popular GSM/GPRS modem modules and the required SIM card holder. The DNP/EVA9 can also be provided with premounted Sony/Ericsson GSM/GRS modem including antenna and a pre-paid SIM card upon request. The board also includes a text LCD with 4-line x 16-character display, 4 buttons, a couple LEDs for indicating status and an MMC/SD card slot.

To facilitate development work, a starter kit is available with DNP/9200, DNP/EVA9 and a full GNU-based cross development environment for Linux and Windows PCs. The DNP/9200 itself includes a preconfigured embedded Linux in Flash that has special drivers for Ethernet, USB and GPRS, as well as a complete TCP/IP protocol stack with various server and client functions for Ethernet and GPRS. The starter kit CD-ROM comes with numerous sample programs. The scope of delivery even includes C source code for implementing Linux-based USB/Ethernet/GPRS, HTTP/e-mail and HTTP/SMS gateways.

The the US the DNP/9200 and Starter Kit SK/23 are available via Grid Connect Inc. For more information please see www.gridconnect.com
