Kuka Robotics Introduces Self-Contained Linear Slide

New One Axis Linear Slide Adds Flexibility of 7th or 8th Axis to Robots

Clinton Township, Michigan - Aug 22, 2005 - KUKA Robotics Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of industrial robots, today announced the introduction of the KUKA Linear Slide a self contained one axis unit that adds a 7th or 8th axis when used with another robot. The unit, which can be floor or ceiling mounted, adds additional flexibility to currently available robots.

"Our customers have consistently looked to KUKA for the broadest product line to fit their applications," said Joe Campbell, director of strategic alliances for KUKA Robotics Corporation. "KUKA offers this slide unit completely assembled, fitted out with cabling and commissioned with a KUKA robot giving our customers one stop shopping convenience when their applications call for 7 or 8 axes."

The KUKA Linear Slide is the only product of its kind offered by a robotic manufacturer in the United States. With its capability of being floor or ceiling mounted it is inherently flexible and ideal for a variety of applications across many industries. The unit comes equipped with a mounting face on the carriage for the attachment of a robot. It is driven by a brushless AC servomotor with rack and pinion gearing. Range of movement is managed by programmable software limit switches with a safeguard of mechanical stops if these limit switches are overrun. The slides are offered in 3 sizes to accommodate robot models with varying payload capacities. The KUKA KL 250/2 is designed for robots with 6 to 16 kg payload capacities, the KUKA KL 100 for 30-60 kg and the KUKA KL 1500/2 for 100-500 kg.

The company plans to showcase the new slides and PackExpo in Las Vegas, NV September 26-28th (booth #C-2500) as a part of its order building demonstration cell.

KUKA Robotics Corporation, with its parent company KUKA Roboter GmbH, Augsburg, Germany, is one of the world's leading manufacturers of industrial robots, with an annual production volume approaching 10,000 units, and an installed base of over 60,000 units. The company's 5 and 6 axis robots range from 3kg to 500kg payloads, and 635mm to 3700mm reach, all controlled from a common PC based controller platform. KUKA robots are utilized in a diverse range of industries including the appliance, automotive, aerospace, consumer goods, logistics, food, pharmaceutical, medical, foundry and plastics industries and in multiple applications including material handling, machine loading, assembly, packaging, palletizing, welding, bending, joining, and surface finishing.
