Linear Drive Assembly enables ramp down of linear speed.

Press Release Summary:

Option K enables mechanical control over ramp down speed prior to reversal of drive head. It features auto-reverse, zero backlash, variable pitch, up to 800 lbs axial thrust, and accuracy to within ± 0.005 in. Travel speed may be up to 13 ft/sec, at constant rpm, over max distance of 16 ft. K Option is suitable for converting, metalworking, and finishing operations where reversal of drive head must be smooth, without sudden stops that could jar or vibrate system.

Original Press Release:

Linear Drive Assembly Enables Ramp Down of Linear Speed Prior to Reversal Without Electronic Control System

Aston, PA, September 2002 - The K option is a new linear drive assembly from Amacoil/Uhing that enables purely mechanical control over ramp down speed prior to reversal of the drive head. Available for new installations and, in some cases, as a retrofit to Amacoil/Uhing RG rolling ring drive assemblies, the K option has applications in a wide range of converting, assembly, metalworking and finishing operations where reversal of the drive head must be smooth, without sudden stops that could jar or vibrate the system, and have an adverse affect on the outcome of the process. For example, the whip-like action of an extended applicator nozzle attached to the drive head may be prevented using the K option, which would assure a smooth, gradual reduction in linear speed, dissipating the forward momentum of the extension arm before reversing. The K option is also useful in traverse winding assemblies for fine gauge materials that tear or break easily. The K option may also be configured to "dwell" for applications where the drive head must be stopped before reversal.

Adjustable hardware "stops" are user-positioned to achieve the desired ramp down in linear speed, independently of the drive motor's rotational speed; there is no need for electronics or programming. Additionally, reversal of the drive head travel direction is also automatic and mechanically controlled - independent of drive motor controls.

The K option linear drive assembly features auto-reverse, zero backlash, variable pitch, up to 800 lbs. axial thrust, and accuracy to within +/- 0.005 inches. Travel speed may be up to 13 ft./sec., at constant RPMs, over a maximum distance of 16 feet. The only maintenance required for Amacoil/Uhing rolling ring drive assemblies is periodic, light lubrication of the shaft.

Pricing for Amacoil/Uhing linear drive assemblies with the K option starts at under $1,000 for basic systems. Delivery can take up to several weeks depending on the level of customization required. For more information please contact Amacoil, Inc., 2100
