Linde North America Passes EPA Protocol Gases Audit

Murray Hill & New Providence, New Jersey, U.S., - Linde is among a select group of companies that passed a rigorous audit by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for producing and supplying gases used to calibrate instruments for emissions testing.

Linde North America is a member of The Linde Group, a world-leading gases and engineering company. Linde produces EPA Protocol gases at its plant in Alpha, New Jersey, under its SPECTRA® brand name as part of Linde's HiQ® specialty gases range. This facility has passed every Protocol gas audit the EPA has ever conducted.

As part of its national Protocol Gas Verification Program (PGVP), the EPA, in cooperation with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), conducted a blind audit of EPA Protocol gases that are used to calibrate continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS) and the instruments used in EPA reference methods. The use of EPA Protocol gases in these applications helps ensure the quality of the emissions data the Agency uses to assess the effectiveness of its emissions reduction programs under the Clean Air Act.

"We believe EPA's published results for 2010 validate the quality, accuracy and consistency of our SPECTRA brand EPA Protocol gases," said Steve Mandel, head of environmental and calibration products for Linde North America.

"Not every specialty gas producer passed the audit. It's a rigorous test that verifies the quality of our production process. We've been producing these gases for many years and our customers can continue to feel confident that Linde's gases will assure the accuracy of their emission testing results," Mandel said. Among Linde's customers are companies that test emissions from a variety of industrial processes, such as electric utilities, oil refineries and various chemical operations.

The audit process includes the purchase of cylinders by an independent third-party that is experienced in the purchase of these types of cylinders. "The EPA conducts the audit without informing the participating company that a blind sample of their cylinders is being audited to assure the integrity of the results," Mandel said.
