Lights, Camera, Action, Micrel to Exhibit Automotive, Industrial Solutions Aimed at Europe's Growing Markets

MUNICH, – Micrel, Inc. (Nasdaq:MCRL), an industry leader in high performance analog and high-speed mixed signal, LAN, and timing and communications solutions, today announced that it will be previewing a comprehensive line of IC solutions aimed at the growing industrial and automotive markets in Europe at Electronica 2014 in Munich, Germany. The trade show will be held Nov. 11-14th, at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. Micrel will be exhibiting at Halle A5 booth 531; Nov. 11-13 19, 9:00 to 18:00 and Nov. 14 9:00 to 17:00. Live demonstrations of products will include:

Lights

Micrel will be showcasing a motorcycle LED Headlamp demo that includes Micrel's MAQ3203 BUCK LED driver. The MAQ3203, an AEC-Q100 step-down High Brightness LED (HBLED) driver IC, reduces the complexity and cost of high current LED driver solutions in automotive lighting applications.

The MAQ3203 is capable of driving multiple HBLEDs in series at more than 90 percent efficiency with ±5 percent current accuracy from input voltages of 4.5V to 42V. With its hysteretic control architecture and high-side current sense scheme, the device provides an ideal solution to drive the HBLEDs with constant current. The MAQ3203 operating frequency is adjustable up to 1.5MHz which allows flexibility in design and offers a frequency dithering feature to mitigate EMI. The IC features a dedicated PWM dimming pin, an enable pin for very low power shutdown, over temperature protection and an under-voltage lockout. The MAQ3203 has an external power switch and requires no external compensation. The device is available in a SOIC-8L package and will drive two 1.2A LED strings demonstrating both high and low beam capabilities.

Camera

In support of the growing global market for driver assistance systems, Micrel will be showing an Automotive Megapixel Ethernet Camera for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The production-ready camera is designed and manufactured by camera specialist SMS and features Micrel's unique low emissions networking solutions. The Megapixel Ethernet Camera is just 26mm(3) in size and significantly reduces cable harness costs by providing both Ethernet data transmission and power over the same low-cost unshielded twisted-pair wiring. Based on Micrel's leading-edge power management and new Quiet-WIRE™ IEEE standard Ethernet transceiver technology for reduced electro-magnetic emissions, it features IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet support, sub micro Amp standby power consumption with signal detect activation and fast link up. In addition, one of Micrel's high voltage Synchronous Switching Regulators, featuring Hyper Light Load™ and Hyper Speed Control™ architecture, provides all the capabilities of Power over Ethernet (PoE) without incurring any additional system cost. Timing is provided by Micrel's DSC1001 MEMS-based LVCMOS oscillator, offering robust performance with enhanced frequency stability over temperature and AEC-Q100 compliance. This represents a total solution with Micrel's finest products from LAN, Timing and Communications and Linear Power Solutions product lines wherein a combination of Micrel's performance, compact size and low power allow automotive manufacturers to implement a unique solution to meet the emerging demands for applications such as ADAS. This essentially increases performance while lowering BOM costs and accelerating time to market for this life saving device.

In tandem with these demos, Micrel's TimeFlash programmer kit for enabling clock samples of any frequency in minutes will also be showcased. In addition, Crystal-less™ MEMS based clock generators including the DSC2311 and DSC400 which are currently implemented in Micrel customer automotive and industrial designs will be available. These devices represent some of the highest level of integration in timing industry and are well positioned for system BOM consolidation. In addition to being AEC-Q100 certified, these devices deliver the added benefits of exceptional shock, vibration immunity and high stability over wide temperature range. The DSC2311 is ideal for applications such as front and rear cameras, periphery sensory, ADAS, solar inverters, IP cameras, and other space-constrained designs. The DSC400 is ideal for numerous rugged applications including automotive communications and networks; infotainment, surveillance DVR/NVR, robotics and industrial controls.

Action

Micrel will be demonstrating an innovative brushless motor solution in the form of a BLDC motor driving an automotive motor pump. The demand for higher efficiency is increasing based on new government regulations and consumer requirements. Because electrical motors are one of the largest consumers of electrical power, motor driver designers in the automotive and industrial space are in need of more efficient and reliable solutions. The MIC4606 is one of the industry's most robust and power efficient Half Bridge MOSFET drivers designed to address a wide variety of applications including motor drives, UPS and DC/AC invertors. The MIC4606 features Adaptive-Dead-Time and Shoot-Through Protection that actively monitors the Half Bridge to minimize the time between high and low side MOSFET transitions, thereby maximizing power efficiency. Anti-Shoot-Through circuitry prevents erroneous inputs and noise from turning both MOSFETs on at the same time. Along with Micrel's MIC5235, a 150mA highly accurate, low dropout regulator with high input voltage and ultra-low ground current, the demo illustrates a highly efficient, cost effective solution.
