Lighthouse Screens Are the Right Formula for Macau Grand Prix

HK - 07 January 2008 - Featuring eight giant Lighthouse 16mm LED screens, the organisers of this year's Macau Grand Prix (15-18 November) were at no pains to ensure that thousands of international motor racing fans who flocked to the city got the very best view of the actions, wherever they were on the circuit.

"There is a long history of Lighthouse screens being used for motor racing events at all levels," says Mark Chan, Lighthouse's managing director. "The superb picture quality and colour reproduction of our products assure the corporate images of the advertisers and the racing teams being accurately featured, which is extremely important. Additionally, the unrivalled reliability has made our 16mm panels the best choice of rental companies worldwide for this type of application."

Located a few miles southwest of Hong Kong, Macau is, like its bigger neighbour, a special administrative region of China. Boasting a thriving tourist industry, one of the city's annual highlights is the Grand Prix, a unique event that sees four days of frantic car and motorcycle racing round a 3.8-mile circuit through the city streets, culminating in the Polytec Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix.

November 2007 saw the running of the 54th Macau Grand Prix, with thousands of spectators enjoying the racing, culminating in the main race being won by Briton Oliver Jarvis.

With the circuit comprising long straights and tight corners through an urban area, getting a good view of the actions could be difficult. Hence Hong Kong-based screen specialist Join Merit Media (JMM) was brought in to provide large Lighthouse 16mm LED screens, placed at strategic points along the circuit to ensure that everyone got a good view of the key actions, plus the broadcast of associated media and advertisements.

The main screen was located near Macau University and measured seven by six panels (7.11m x 4.57m). Three further four by four panel screens each measuring 4.06m x 3.05m were installed near the main spectator entrance, with another three five by four panel screens (each 5.08m x 3.05m) and a further screen installed elsewhere on the circuit, allowing the crowd to get as close to the excitement as possible.

JMM is a long-term user of Lighthouse LED screens and the outdoor 16mm pixel pitch panels were the ideal solution for high resolution, highly uniform screens with a wide viewing angle.

"The R16 screen provides extremely stable performance and enables spectators to enjoy very high quality video, both outdoors and indoors. Its high quality resolution meets our mission statement - Perfecting Visions - to bring visual excellence to commercial, entertainment and sports events," says JMM's operations director, Mr Kenneth Yip.

"In addition, the stackable design makes the panels very easy to install and dismantle, thus suitable for the very tight installation schedule for this event."

The screens were controlled by Lighthouse LIP-KX processors and Supervisor scalers, with the feeds for the four around the circuit provided by the Macau Grand Prix Committee. The screens elsewhere in the city featured content supplied by local television networks.

"We are pleased to say that the R16 screens performed very successfully," says Mr Yip. "They were extremely stable and the organizers were very impressed with the quality of the image.

"Join Merit Media will continue to provide Lighthouse R16 panels as our best vision solution, further enhancing our long term relationship."
