Original Press Release:

The Fortis(TM) Line of Lift Trucks from Hyster Company Offers the Right Lift Truck for any Application

(Greenville, N.C. - Americas Division Headquarters) - Hyster Company, one of the world's leading manufacturers and marketers of lift trucks, is advancing the way lift trucks are brought to market.

As new Hyster® lift truck series are introduced, Hyster Company will offer features based on a multi-tiered offering of engine-transmission configurations - Fortis(TM), Fortis(TM) Advance and Fortis(TM) Advance+. This ensures customers purchase exactly the right truck for their applications - every feature they need and none they don't.

The Fortis initiative focuses on advances in dependability, cost of operations, productivity and ergonomics to ensure world-class quality is built into every truck. Enhancements were made in each of these areas as a result of transformations in the design process, testing approaches, supplier quality engineering and manufacturing processes.

Rather than designing in sequence by lift truck capacity, Hyster Company engineers have moved to a product series mentality. In addition, more than 1 million man-hours have been put into testing. This includes finite element analysis, computerized simulations, shaker testing and accelerated corrosion testing, all conducted before the prototypes were put through their paces in tough customer applications and at Hyster Company's state-of-the-art proving grounds in Portland, Oregon.

The result of the new Fortis design is an impressive list of improvements to four critical systems accounting for more than 70 percent of unscheduled maintenance - electrical, engine cooling, hydraulics and transmission.

An upgraded electrical system utilizing Hyster® field-proven CANbus technology provides enhanced reliability. Solid-state Hall Effect sensors and switches are magnetically operated, have no electro-mechanical contacts and are 100 percent sealed from the environment. Sealed connectors on all electrical connections eliminate the opportunity for contamination caused by water. The entire truck is rated for 200 psi pressure washing, permitting periodic cleaning. Superior wire harness routing ensures consistent, high-quality assembly that provides maximum dependability.

Enhancements to the cooling system improve day-to-day operations and long-term durability. This design has 20 percent additional cooling capacity, resulting in dramatically lower operating temperatures. By significantly improving airflow through optimizing the ducting and adding high-volume tunnels in the counterweight, longer component life is realized. This new cooling system increases uptime while minimizing the opportunity for overheating in intensive applications.

The enhanced durability of the Fortis line of lift trucks comes partly from the redesigned hydraulic system. O-ring face seal fittings are used on all hydraulic connections and throughout the cooling system. By eliminating pipe fittings and thread sealants, hydraulic system reliability is maximized. Relocation of the hydraulic control valve from the engine compartment to just below the floor plate simplifies plumbing, reduces the potential for hydraulic leaks and significantly lowers valve temperature, providing better serviceability for this critical component while improving engine compartment access.

By matching the right engine and transmission, greater fuel efficiency is achieved. The new, patented Hyster designed and manufactured transmissions are electronically controlled, providing superior performance while operating at lower temperatures than mechanically controlled transmissions. As a result, three levels of feature sophistication provide an even higher level of durability and reliability.
