Lexmark X3550 AIO Delivers Best Value in PC Magazine 'Total Cost' Scenario

LEXINGTON, Ky., Nov. 28 -- The Lexmark X3550 All-in-One (AIO) has a lower total cost of ownership over a three-year period than printer models from Canon, HP and Kodak, in the light-duty printing scenario provided as an example in a recent article by PC Magazine.

In its edition dated Oct. 2, 2007, PC Magazine tested the cartridges from various manufacturers' models to determine page yield, and showed how costs per page and printer hardware prices interact to determine total cost of ownership.

The article showed that claimed yields based on the new ISO/IEC standard were in fact comparable even between different manufacturers. It then went on to show how to project total cost of ownership, and it used two possible scenarios to make the point that the relative costs for different printers will vary based on how many pages of what kind get printed.

In one scenario, PC Magazine assumed printing volumes of everyday documents of 100 pages per month, including 80 in black and 20 in color, for a period of three years. Photo printing was excluded, because it is not covered in the current ISO/IEC standard. The technology publication compared the following printer models, chosen because they all base their claimed yields on the standard:
o Canon Pixma MP600
o HP Officejet J5780 All-in-One
o HP Officejet K5400dtn Color
o Kodak EasyShare 5300 All-in-One
o Lexmark X3550 Color All-in-One

"For light use, the Lexmark X3550 is the least expensive in the long run ...," PC Magazine said of the light-duty scenario in the article.

"What matters is the total cost of printing, which includes the price of the printer plus the cost for all the pages you'll print over its lifetime," PC Magazine said.

For example, PC Magazine showed that a consumer would experience a $275.83 total cost of ownership for the Lexmark X3550 over three years while showing that the Kodak EasyShare 5300 All-in-One would cost $333.19 over the same period. That represents a savings of $57.36, or 17 percent.

Also in this scenario, the model closest to the leading Lexmark X3550 AIO was the HP Officejet J5780 AIO. PC Magazine showed the total cost of ownership for that HP model at $322.23. That's $46.40, or 14 percent, more than the cost shown for the Lexmark X3550.

"PC Magazine's analysis reinforces Lexmark's focus on giving customers the best overall printing value," said Paul A. Rooke, Lexmark executive vice president and president of its Consumer Printer Division.

The Lexmark X3550 AIO not only offers consumers a great value, but also gives them the ability to easily upgrade to more advanced technology if they choose because it includes optional wireless capability(1).
