Let it Roll - Inductotherm Manufactures Largest Melting System for Davy Roll

Inductotherm Europe, an Inductotherm Group company, manufactured and installed Europe's largest melting system for Davy Roll Co. of the UK. The installation of the first integrated melting system of its type in Europe marks a £3 million investment and the largest UK order for furnaces in the past decade. It also puts The Davy Roll Co. in a position to be able to cast rolls in the region of 75 tonne capacity. Other benefits of the substantial investment are the ability to meet short delivery requirements and the chance to adopt a flexible melting regime to reduce energy costs.

The 7000kW Inductotherm Tri-Trak, consisting of one 15 tonne and two 30 tonne furnaces fully computerized with the Meltminder® 200 series melt shop control and management system, had to be shipped and installed in a very tight schedule. A three-week shutdown period was set aside to remove the old furnaces, modify the foundations, and install the new integrated system. The equipment, capable of melting in the region of 14 tonnes of iron or steel an hour, was all designed and manufactured at Inductotherm's European base in Droitwich, England.

The new Tri-Trak replaces dated equipment and is the culmination of three years of discussions between the two companies to find the most suitable melting solution for the foundry which is based in the North-East of England and exports 80% of its production.

Steve Hill of Inductotherm Europe says, "This Tri-Trak system can provide any ratio of its kW between three heavy duty steel shell furnaces simultaneously and gives Davy Roll the ability to cast in excess of 75 tonne to produce their special composite rolls for the steel industry."

One of the important stipulations was that the furnaces could be controlled from one screen and that, although there was a huge amount of information available, visually it would be simple. Steve Bell from Davy Roll says his men have relished the new kit: "We've got much more control over the system now and Meltminder® gives you so much information that you can be completely on top of things - the system is comprehensive but user-friendly and we now have the flexibility we demand to meet short deliveries. In the future, we will also be looking to melt during the night and pour during the day so our energy bills should come down which will be an important benefit. Reliability is also an important factor as our previous furnaces were 30 years old an a lot changes in that time."

Inductotherm Europe is an expert in induction melting technology and is a dominant supplier of induction melting, holding, pouring and heating equipment to European foundries from Portugal to Russia and everywhere in between.
